Added Nov 8, 2009 by aquadl of Vancouver (31 Reviews) The 70th and Granville Street area has alot of Sushi places Went here with my family yesterday for lunch. We had made reservations. We arrived with the table already setup for us.
I noticed that all table settings were of the disposable kind - Chopstick, wasabi saucers and even the Bento Box containers. I would have like to see the "Eat in" settings to be more the permanent type. The restaurant is more the "Take out type" and accepted payment is Cash Only.
We all ordered a variety of choices, from Bento Boxes to California Rolls, to Noodles in soup. I would say the Bento Boxes are smaller than the other locations, such as Risty's and Komo Sushi. THe the quality is about the same and the price is the same.
With all the different locations here on Granville Street, this places fits right in as one of those places I would go back to for some inexpensive sushi/noodles. |

We went in on a Friday for takeout around 4pm and noticed there were only two tables being occupied out of about dozen or so small tables and no others lined up for takeout, I guess that's not uncommon for this time of day. A large screen t.v. was on the wall in front of us as we entered playing something which seemed ill-chosen for a dining room ( I always wonder why Asian restaurants think that having t.v.'s make for better food consumption? ). It appeared that the wooden chairs and tables were of the cheap variety, and quickly glancing about the room you got the sense that the aura of the restaurant was of a simple no frills eatery.
The waitress immediately greeted us and had the takeout order sitting by the till. She was very smiley and cheerful and quickly calculated our bill. We happily left with a rather heavy feeling bag and headed home to peruse the order. Immediately upon opening the containers I noticed that some rolls were missing, I added up the cost of what everything in the bag should have been and something was off. Phoning back the same waitress who originally took my order over the phone, and who greeted me at the door answered the phone. She repeated my original order ( I know she missed my rolls, but she was so sweet I didn't have the heart to correct her ), I asked her to calculate what the cost was and she quoted $3 less than what I paid. Immediately she realized her mistake apologized sincerely and stated that I'd be reimbursed upon my return, I told her she could keep the overcharge as a tip because it was too much of an inconvenience to return again for such a small amount. She said next time we ordered she'd reimburse us, in my mind there's no need but I appreciate the kind heartedness and sincerity.
After all that the House Roll was really big, the California Roll was comparable to Samurai's but without Samurai's mega-dose of its MSG like substance which leaves you thirsting for water afterwards. The tuna and salmon were more regular sized. All-in-all the food tasted pretty good.
We'd do takeout here again. |

| Added Jul 19, 2009 by hungryfordinner of Vancouver (76 Reviews) Value!! Food: Not what you would call authentic, but it's delicious!!! It's the same stuff as the other Sushi King on West Boulevard, and similar to Samurai Sushi House on Cambie Street. Everything's fresh, and you can tell because they have so many customers!
Service: Waitresses were very nice. Food came quickly.
Value: LOVE the value! I ordered half a house roll ($5.50) and was sooo full after 4 pieces I could hardly finish the last piece. The rolls are really quite ginormous! And they don't skimp on the raw fish in the house rolls either. It's like sashimi + california roll filling fitted into a giant roll!
Ambiance: Clean, but not pretty. Looks a bit outdated. Washroom seemed clean, but it was a bit ..dingy. I don't mind sitting in the restaurant, but would do take out next time.
I'd DEFINITELY return!!!!!! |

| Added Jul 2, 2009 by munchingalong of squamish (11 Reviews) Simply amazing! Sushi King House - wow! This place is incredible, it really is. The rolls are huge, I've never seen anything like that. One california roll and I'm stuffed for the rest of the day. You would think that the size of the rolls would equal poor quality but this is not the case. The fish is always very fresh. I ordered tuna sashimi the last time I went and the pieces were massive. At least twice the size of most orders. I was hesitant when I tried the first piece but it was delicious. Everything is good - the miso soup is yummy and the spinach gommae is one of the best I've had in Vancouver.
The ambience leaves a bit to be desired so I would recommend this as a take out place. The servers always offer me tea if I have to wait for my sushi and apologize for a one-minute delay. They always thank me and the sushi chefs in the back wave goodbye and say thank you.
I live in Squamish so I make this a must-stop every time I'm in the city! |

You have to try the seaweed and miso with clams, fantastic. Sushi portions are larger than any other sushi restaurant I've been to in the lower mainland. Service is fast and friendly. Only disadvantage is that they only accept cash but for 30 bucks/couple, you'll be stuffed. |

Sushi Restaurant Criteria Checklist:

Pros: - Great value for the hockey team and kids - Very casual and accessible - Parking - Value - They have a house roll that is the size of a Yule log!
Cons: - Interior is too simple to bring a date - Their English is not very good - Neon lights in the window - They use some disposible containers for plate service - They have a house roll that is the size of a Yule log!

The sashimi quality is not the best, but it's not the worse either - but they're huge! The rolls are the best value. A half order of their ginormous house roll is more than enough for lunch and it's only $5.50! Their rolls are big and it's not only because it's stuffed with mostly rice. They actually stuff it with a lot of the good stuff! That's why we keep coming back! |

| Added Aug 1, 2008 by MBAK of Vancouver (69 Reviews) Great food at a great value. I've been frequenting Sushi King for the last couple months now, and can honestly say that this place is a gem!
The food is really tasty (I especially enjoy their udon and ramen dishes) and generous. The portions are HUGE, but not at the expense of the quality. I've had everything here from the rolls, sashimi, gyoza, tempera..I could go on.
The service is excellent. The waitresses are very attentive and polite. And if you order take out, they're always quick and accurate.
The value is spectacular! Generous portions at low prices.
The ambiance is much nicer than other sushi places at competitive prices. The restaurant is very clean as well.
I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good sushi at reasonable prices! |

| Added Jul 23, 2008 by chasiubow of North Van (673 Reviews) big I was craving sushi and when I saw a review for this place on the DH website I decided to give it a try. Mrs. C and I had a little trouble finding the place at first, as it doesn't exactly stand out.
The inside was nice and clean if a bit plain. The servers were extremely friendly and my tea cup was kept full. The prices seemed a little expensive until I saw the size of the rolls. WOW, they are huge!
We had the tuna combo, a tuna/salmon plate and a beef teriyaki roll. The size of the pieces was ginormous, but the flavour was all there. I recommend the spicy tuna roll. I also recommend not placing a big order until you see the size of the sushi ;)
Overall a tasty experience, but I have to say I prefer my sushi a little smaller. |

| Added Jul 22, 2008 by monmon of Vancouver, Canada (12 Reviews) I am in love with SKH My fav sushi place in all of lower mainland.
It has fed my sushi craving for over 5 years, whether rainy, snowy, windstorm, or chokingly humid, Sushi King was there for me on my way to UBC.
Service: very friendly. they know us by now and remembers what we order. very attentive on filling your tea/water, and always service with a smile =)
Food: They still have the best spicy agedashi tofu, the best(!) sauce for their tempura (and for only ~$5, you can get an appy tempura that has 4 prawns and 2 yam! *drool*). Their cones are amazingly huge.. try the spicy salmon, it's gigantic. their rolls are huge too. M other fav is the Uni Sushi when it is in season, $2 per sushi, and it too, yes, is gigantic. aww man now i want some sushi.
Ambiance: Decent. Maybe cuz i've been there for over 5 years, it feels very cozy. i prefer sitting near the back of this small restaurant . |

| Added Apr 6, 2008 by cee-licious of Vancouver (38 Reviews) cheap price, large portion I had never heard of this place before until I recently went with a friend. It was pretty busy but understable since it was lunch hour. I looked around and most people were having noodle soups. The sushi rolls were HUGE, not as big as samurai but still large portions. Had a maki combo that came with salmon, tuna and california rolls for $6.50. I couldn't even finish it all. I'm not sure if the sushi chefs are japanese or not. The waitresses definitely were not and they were friendly but just a tad slow. All in all, would definitely go back for cheap eats. |
| Added Apr 3, 2008 by hoisin of Vancouver (11 Reviews) I'd return to Sushi King I've been a fan of Samurai Sushi but lately their rolls have been tasting the same. Heard some good things and read some good reviews about Sushi King so me and my hubby thought we'd give it a try. We ordered some of our staples: california roll, futomaki, and scallop roll. We also ordered seaweed salad and a vegetable ramen. Their rolls were pretty solid and the futomaki was actually bigger than Samurai's! Bigger because it had more stuff in it, and not so much rice. The salad was good and the ramen broth was actually pretty tasty. I would definitely order from Sushi King again. |
| Added Nov 18, 2007 by foodhunter of vancouver (23 Reviews) Good deal for your money Have been here several times, both eat-in and take-out. Premises are clean. Service can be slow depending on the time of day but servers are always polite and pleasant not like the Cambie Samurai sushi. Much like WestJet cabin staff :-) vs Air Canada :-( Portions are generous, prices are good and food quality rivals any other small scale sushi place. To get better sushi, you'll have to go to one of those fancy places and expect to spend your paycheck in one sitting. My daughter eats a lot of sushi on the run due to late after school activities and this is one of her favourite places for maki sushi. |
| Added Sep 22, 2007 by farahfoods of surrey (26 Reviews) Huge portions and very good prices Every time we've been here it's been full. Not sure if this place lives up to it's reputation of fabulous sushi but it is good. Prices are great. Will contine to eat here whenever in the neighbourood but likely not worth the trip alone. Some of the rolls are so large they're very hard to eat without making a mess. |
| Added Sep 10, 2007 by genux of Vancouver (16 Reviews) Big and Plain Sushi King emphasizes more on the king-sized servings. The taste is pretty much average at best. I've tried a sampling of their sushi and donburi to get a feel of their dishes. The donburi came out rather dry, but with a king-sized serving of rice in the bowl. The sushi is *huge*. Probably a good deal for the money, but they don't even have any semblance of freshness.
It's not that bad... Just not a place I'd recommend if you want a good, hearty meal. |
| Added Jul 13, 2007 by zareku of Vancouver (9 Reviews) Not as bad as everyone else says it is. I was actually very surprised that the reviews for Sushi King on Granville were so poor. My room mate and I have been visiting Sushi King for the last couple months now with more than satisfactory results.
The service lacks a bit, I do agree. The ladies can sometimes seem as they've forgotten about you, but at least they're prompt. The sushi sizes are enormous, especially the house roll. I've never tried any of their sashimi, but I've heard it's good.
Try it out once, at least. Be your own judge. |
| Added Apr 23, 2007 by mui122 of Richmond (6 Reviews) Not a big fan of huge sushi I agree with the previous reviewer that this place is definitely not that great. I've been there once and the huge sushi is kind of frightening. The fish is not fresh at all. The size ruins my appetite as well. I recall that I felt I needed to stop eating after finishing 2 pieces of sushi. This is definitely not quality authentic japanese food. If you prefer quantity over quality and authenticity~ than I guess you won't mind dining here~ but if you want good food~ You should probably stay away~ I dont think this even qualifies as the Mcdonalds of japanese food~ at least Mcdonalds were created by americans~ its still authentic~ and yes the fish on the sushi is huge as well (they arent solely filling u up with rice) but the fish is of low quality~ so its the same deal |
| Added Apr 22, 2007 by forgamez of Vancouver (15 Reviews) Unbelivable sushi - You gotta be kidding In response to the reviewer below, I can guarantee you that Sushi King DOES NOT have "unbelievable sushi". There fish is fresh in the sense that they through a lot of fish a day due to their high turnover. Real "fresh" fish is based on the time it has been away from the water. Trust me, their fish is not fresh. In addition, their Salmon (and more than likely all of their fish) is farmed. Please google what happens to farmed salmon and what is in it. Its disgusting. Also, all of their cooked items tastes and looks like crap. Basically, it comes out the same as you would find at a AYCE place. If you want good cooked food, go to an izakaya, such as Guu.
I live fairly close to Sushi King and I do eat here on the rare occasion. Not because it is amazing quality, but because it is cheap. It offers good value for sushi, and it is convenient for me. It is akin to the Mcdonalds of sushi. But I sure wouldn't eat here on a weekly basis, nor would I make a trek here.
I agree with Maverick below. Size of sushi is not what counts. I have had sushi at Tsukiji fish market, and I fully understand what is quality sushi. Unfortunately, quality sushi is expensive, which is to be expected. If you want good sushi for a good price, check out Sushi Hachi in Richmond (awesome place) or Ajisai in Kerrisdale. $20-30 will get you an authentic taste of Japan. |
| Added Apr 22, 2007 by victory66 of Burnaby (31 Reviews) Unbelievable sushi I have been to this restaurant several times, mostly on the weekends, before heading to work in the area. The servers are always pleasant, they remember me each time I go there. The sushi is large, but unlike what Maverick may think, it isn't the amount of rice that makes them big, it is the actual fish and other ingredients. The fish is always fresh and the other dishes they serve (donburi and udon bowls) are tasty and very filling. Will return even if not working in the area. |
| Added Mar 4, 2007 by kammage of Marpole (4 Reviews) Ginormous servings Heard positive things about this place, so I walked on over there for takeout last night. The lady took my order and I hung out for a bit while I waited for my food. The servers all seemed very kind, one even asked if I wanted to eat anything while I waited. The restaurant is small though, like a lot of sushi places.
My order was done FAST, I was in and out of there in less than 10 minutes. Almost started to drool when I saw how big those rolls were. Oh and the negitoro was extremely TASTY.
Overall, definitely worth checking out. Good food for cheap prices! |
| Added Oct 12, 2006 by 100 of Kitsilano, Vancouver (13 Reviews) Cheap sushi, decent quality Skip Samurai Sushi, head over here instead. This and the Kerrisdale location are much better at serving big sushi of decent quality, and at a great price. This place looks much cleaner, the fish is much fresher, and the service is surprisingly good (I usually expect zero service from these kinds of places). |
| Added Aug 27, 2006 by Infinity of Broadway, Vancouver (1 Reviews) Always full I love this place. I first discovered this place while walking down granville to bubble world. My sister and I decided to try this place out. The service is impeccable, we were greeted by a nice waitress. I ordered the maki b combo, and to my surprise the sushi were gigantic! Especially the house roll. The chefs had a nice giggle when they saw the look in my eyes when we discovered how big the sushi is. Now, I go there regularly with a few friends to enjoy delicious sushi for a small price. |
| Added Aug 21, 2006 by schweetb of Burnaby (9 Reviews) Alwasy my favorite~ When it comes to eating sushi I tend to lean towards an all you can eat restaurant - I like variety. However, for the days I crave for sushi but not all you can eat...Sushi King is always my first pick.
Their restaurant and location maybe a lil tough to get around, but their food makes up for it. The sunomono is generously portioned with real prawns - their sushi rolls are out of this world. The size and the amount of filling they add into their sushi rolls are outrageously huge. Their sashimi are fresh and well sized. Try their homemade spicy sauce - it's so good....not your typical viet chilly sauce most jap restaurant uses.
I wouldn't recommend going with a too large group as their dining area is quite limited. Sushi King has been consistent with their service, food and cleanliness - - good enough for me to keep returning^^ |
| Added Jun 1, 2006 by Benji of Marpole, Vancouver (2 Reviews) The Biggest Sushi in Town So it was a couple of weeks back, when I was CRAVING sushi. I had to have it! I had just moved to marpole, and didn't know the area that well. So naturally I pick up the phone book. I start phoning a couple of places, I got busy signals, and no answer's.
OK...
So I called Sushi King House. I asked if they had my favorite sushi, and they did. YAY!! So I walked there.
I ordered for take out, as their dining area was as if it was pulled out of the 80's. So hey packed it up for me, and I walked home.
I got home, and I open'd the container's.. OMG!!! These are the biggest Rolls I have ever seen. I could only get through half of my sushi. It was so yummie!!
Thumbs upto Sushi House King.
I have been back many time, and am pleased every time!

| Added Feb 18, 2006 by larry_chimp_man of Marpole, Vancouver (2 Reviews) Sushi King House Sushi King House easily takes my vote as the best Sushi in Marpole, not an easy feat considering there are five competing restaurants in the area. The rolls are large and plentiful and the prices are cheap.
While mainly a take-out location, Sushi King House also accomodates those planning to eat in. The service is fairly ordinary although food usually arrives relatively quickly.
Try out Sushi King House, you'll be coming back for more!
