Added Oct 5, 2009 by chasiubow of North Van (673 Reviews) cleaner? Mrs. C and I were in Chinatown and looking for a quick bite when I reminded her that we could also use some steamed buns. We hit NBR for a double shot of snacks. The line-up for buns was biblical, so we decided to fight our way through the throng of hungry Filipino bun-lovers and get a table instead. Service was brusque to put it kindly, but we kind of expected that. I wouldn’t smile if I worked here either. As for ambience, it was the same as last time (i.e. run down and disturbingly orange) but it looked like the boss bought a new mop because the floor was much cleaner than I remembered from my last sit-down meal here. I didn’t have the courage to look at the w/c.
I had the delicious beef with noodles (special plate “A”) for six bucks, and upgraded to an iced coffee beverage for a buck more. I also thought about takeout, but that costs an extra 50 cents : (. My beloved shopping companion had HK style French toast which was reported to be great, and not expensive. She went with iced tea, but soon realized that coffee with condensed milk would have been a better choice. As for price, the whole meal cost 13 bucks. That was a very good deal. We plan on getting our buns some day when the line-up is shorter.

Their other stuff is also really good like the apple tarts that people have mentioned. And if you like egg tarts, they sell ones as big as a pie!
I've never sat down and eaten there so I can't comment on that. |

I'll always remember my favorite steamed buns, steamed white sugar dessert and apple tarts. Having found all that at New Town I don't need to go anywhere else.
If you buy from the front counter, the service is pretty fast. If you choose to eat at the restaurant, it's a bit ghetto but you'll just get to eat it there.
Besides the original Chinatown location, there is another store in Surrey off of the Surrey Central skytrain station. Same stuff as Chinatown but way less people!
New Town delivers old time flair that keeps me going back.=) |

Food products are continually consistant. They offer various varieties of steamed bun products. I usually pick up a 1/2 to a doz. They also have dumpling type, egg rolls and sweet tarts. All are pretty good and are worth it if you like those types of items. Pender Street store better though. Not really a place to dine, but they have a few tables to sit at. Mostly they really are a bakery. Still haven't found better buns with varieties. |
| Added Jan 22, 2008 by lovingfood of Kerrisdale (72 Reviews) Decent food! I went to the one in Richmond. It's a small store. I assume the selections are probably less than the one in China town? (never been to the one in China town) However the food tastes great and it's good value.
Food tastes great. They are in decent size and inexpensive. There are a few seats in the store but I prefer just pay and go. The store is in a square mall. Parking is easy, just park right in front of store. It's very convenient for grabbing a quick bite.
There is no ambiance because it's a small store with no decor. But who cares if you just pay and go.
Service is OK. I don't have a problem with it. You just tell the lady what you want and she will get them for you and let you pay. It's a smooth transaction and no fuzz. I don't really care the staff smiles or not. It's all good. |
| Added Dec 27, 2007 by carrotstop of Vancouver (17 Reviews) Don't bother sitting in...Take it to go The vegetable buns and chicken steam bun were better than T&T dim sum. They were decent size. The bun part was especially delicious, soft, and moist. The huge sesame balls were very very good. Be sure to try one of those bad boys. The service was horrible. The servers were rude. Just purchase the goods and eat somewhere else that serve better tea.
o- ya. The place only takes cash.

Ambiance is not why you come here, but food is very good. Asian style food that isn't particularly cheap. Convenient to find when you're in a hurry. |
| Added Oct 22, 2007 by deborah of Burnaby (2 Reviews) apple tarts are the best ! the steamed bbq pork buns are large and tasty. I also like their large crunchy almond cookies which always taste fresh baked from the oven. The deep fried prawn turnovers and minced pork balls are very good too. |
| Added Jul 4, 2007 by discerning_palate of vancouver (34 Reviews) turnovers good/buns great I absolutely agree with the person who talked about “Apple Tart Mystery Solved!!!”. The apple tarts at New Town aren’t bad. I probably would like them more if I hadn’t have been spoiled with the old recipe from the owner’s of the Hong Kong Café. We used to know one of the proprietors and he would make them and they would be brought over as a gift when a family member visited us. They were a real treat because they were such a rarity. The ones at New Town are like puff pastry, like a regular turnover. But the HK café pastry was like a cross between pie crust and puff and the filling was homemade.
Yes, New Town has the best BBQ pork buns. What makes it is their filling and the moist and slightly sweet dough. I think the dough is yeast risen, not the baking powder type. The key to the filling is in the sauce and in the cut of meat. It’s not as good if it’s only lean meat. You have to have a bit of fat in there too. I had it once with lean meat and was turned off but I tried it again and it was back to normal. In general the menu is solid.

| Added Aug 14, 2006 by Kusano of Richmond (13 Reviews) Go for the Steamed Buns When I walked into New Town, they were just rolling out a fresh batch of steamed Vegetarian buns. Rows and rows of steaming little pillows snuggled into the large bamboo steamer. Had to resist the urge to *poke* the buns as they wheeled by :)
When I tore the bun in half, steam came billowing out and I could see at least 5 types of veggies and CHUNKS of tofu as the filling. Ok, so I realize this may not sound so appetizing to the meat eaters out there, but it's an important note because vegetarians usually get ripped off. I've sure seen my share of cabbage buns. The bun by the way was delicious and surprisingly flavourful for containing only veggies.
After I finished eating, they brought out a fresh batch of egg tarts and again, I couldn't resist so I bought 2 on my way out. Oooooh so dreamy. The custard is SO silky when it's still hot but be warned that it's HOT! Silky smooth, not too sweet and nestled in a puff pastry shell yum!
Don't expect much in terms of ambiance or service. It's all about the buns here. Will definitely be back. |
| Added Jun 3, 2006 by foodfanatic of South Vancouver (295 Reviews) Unique/classic apple pie/turnover. Once every couple of years when I have a craving for their old fashioned--what I can only assume is Asian-style--apple turnovers (they call tarts or pie) though I've never managed to finish an entire one myself. They've managed to keep it consistently the tasty and different from what you get in most other bakeries. The buns are large though the prices make up for that, so in the end, it's not any kind of a deal, really. I don't go there for that though. And then again, it's been many many many years since I've actually sat inside. That aside, I would definitely recommend a quick run in & out to try out the apple turnover/pie. |
| Added Jun 3, 2006 by gfparas of vancouver (3 Reviews) How do I put this? How do I put this?
Well... the steamed buns are so good! Whichever one you pick is really good. I've been getting steamed buns from here for years except... This one time, and the last time, I was eating a steamed bun, adding my sauce to it for more flavour, enjoying every chew... but something poked at my gums and my tongue. I picked it out of my mouth and I couldn't believe my eyes! It was an unmistakable cockroach leg!!!!!! |
| Added May 30, 2006 by epicurious of Burnaby, BC (523 Reviews) Nice buns On the occasion that I visit Chinatown, this place is great to grab a quick snack. The have great steamed buns, especially the deluxe one with everything in it. Meat, egg, veggies...all in one doughy bundle. Nice and cheap too. |
| Added May 30, 2006 by aaunheim of Vancouver (13 Reviews) fun place We discovered this place accidentally while walking through china town, and then found out what a great reputation they have for their bakery. The spicy pork steamed bun is really the best around, and their coconut buns are great for dessert or a snack. One day we decided to sit in the restaurant, and it was a fun experience. I think we were the only non-chinese people in the place, but the server was nice when she took our order and packed up our extras. We had steamed buns, shrimp dumplings, hot and sour soup, and chow mein , all for $24! And it was very good, not too heavy or greasy. If you want a quick meal on a budget, this is the place. |
| Added May 1, 2006 by mythbuster of Vancouver (10 Reviews) The Best Steam Buns in town I've never eaten at the restaurant, but their Chinese stem buns are awesome! When you buy them, they will ask you whether you want them hot or cold. Buy them cold if you plan to eat them at home. Otherwise, get them when they are hot out of the steamer, only if you eat the buns right away. They sell steam buns with a variety of different fillings: Red Bean, Lotus Paste, BBQ-Pork, Curry Chicken, Meat, etc. |
| Added Jan 17, 2006 by chasiubow of North Van (673 Reviews) Eat fast and go. This place is dirty and nasty, but the buns are awesome. I like the spicy pork bun. I also occasionally sit down and eat the smoky beef noodle, which is tasty. I just wish it was hygenic. The cutlery and plates are always clean, just everything else is filthy. Stay OUT of the washrooms. Note: The reviewer has submitted a more recent review for this restaurant. This review does not affect the overall rating and is displayed for information purposes only. |
| Added Nov 4, 2005 by gallivantplease of Vancouver (20 Reviews) Nothing too special, but good pastry The actual restaurant, or "diner", as it has been appropriately dubbed in a previous review, is nothing unique nor extremely worthwhile. The food is standard, but for what you pay, good value. Pastries are cheap and tasty. As mentioned, avoid the sponge cake here, as it's not the best. |
| Added Aug 28, 2005 by trisha of Richmond (4 Reviews) Best steamed chicken buns around THE best place to go to for steamed buns in the GVRD. Sponge cake is not so great (go to T&T instead). Palitow is good. Pancit is not so great. The lady owner of the Richmond location is not person-friendly at all, but don't let it scare you off (i.e. no smile, no hello, and she might not even serve you till she's done eating her own lunch first--she'll make you stand there and wait). I've been going there for years now, that's just the way she is. |
| Added Aug 10, 2005 by jezzme of Burnaby (65 Reviews) Sit down, have a bun, have a talk. (The title of this review is more of a Chinese saying.) New Town Bakery isn't really the kind of place to sit and dine; it has that 70's diner feeling, with it's orange / yellow booth seats, downstairs smorgasboard, and its curly-haired waitresses.
But the buns are always steaming hot and good. We *always* ~$20 worth while we're down there for the week, as well as some to freeze for later. |
| Added Jul 13, 2005 by Tuzio of Vancouver (14 Reviews) Apple Tart Mystery Solved!!! This is really not a review of New Town since I haven't eaten there in years but this is in response to the Apple Tart Mystery... Having grown up in Chinatown --- the best Apple Tarts and to answer Elkaso's mystery... the place was called Hong Kong Cafe. I would give my right nut to have another one of those heavenly tarts. People would drive in from Seattle just to buy a few dozen... |
| Added Jul 12, 2005 by Elkaso of Richmond, BC (9 Reviews) Apple Tarts! When I was a child my father used to bring me to the Cafe across the street. Can't remember the name of it now but they used to have the best apple tarts. When the cafe closed down I didn't know where to go for them but discovered that New Town Bakery has the recipe for them. They are fantastic. They're about $1 each but the best darn apple tarts in town. Don't know much about the other food they serve or their other baked goods - I only went there to pick up some apple tarts. |
| Added Apr 5, 2005 by Garee of Vancouver (9 Reviews) Excellent buns! [Bakery Only Review] Steamed buns are what they are famous for. This is quite apparent, as throughout the day there always seems to be someone transfer buns from the bamboo steamer into the steaming cabinet. And because buns are always kept steaming, they are always hot in a very good way.
The Chinese bun dough is above average, with a smooth and almost chewy texture that successfully survives the typically long time it is exposed to steam. Chicken bun is my personal favourite, with a juicy, tasty chunk of tender meat inside. Their Big Bun (not sure if it's the name) is an equally delicious premium extension of the chicken bun, with chicken, egg yolk, and other additions. BBQ pork bun is also worth a try, but does not carry as much sauce as some of the best Dim Sum varieties. Egg custard bun can be considered a light dessert, with a filling of smooth custard made perfectly sweet.
Some of their other items are very good too, such as: Cream Cones, Butterfly Cookies, Chinese Egg Balls, Chinese Rice Crispy, Chinese Fried Egg Crisps.
Starting at $1.10, I will easily choose buying a fresh, healthy, and very delicious bun here rather than eating at McDonalds. Even their homeless patrons know that. |
