Added Sep 4, 2009 by bcrunner of Vancouver (1 Reviews) Cheap I took my visiting in-laws from southern California to lunch here with the family. It was busy and service was brisk. The lunch menu had a variety of dishes, all at cheap prices. The meat and vegetable soup that came with the lunch special (about 8 bucks) was good, but the chicken was mostly fat and the fish and rice portions too small. We ended up ordering extra rice.
The service was below average - the waitresses kept forgetting to bring the extra rice and utensils that we had asked for (there were 6 of us). Also, my in-laws paid with US cash (at a one to one exchange rate), but were told that they needed to add more for a tip (Their intent was to tip after taking care of the bill first). This seemed a little on the rude side.
Perhaps with a better knowledge of the menu in question at this restaurant the food would have been better, but there are many better choices for service and food in this area of Richmond. |

Added Dec 12, 2008 by grubby of New Westminster (11 Reviews) Food for Cheap! I had a laksa craving and somehow we ended up here. I ordered the singapore laksa (rice noodles, curry soup base, hard boiled egg, bean sprouts, chicken and fish cake). It was pretty good! All that and a free cold drink upgrade!
I enjoyed it so much we went again during the week and ordered the Chinese dinner combo- 2 dishes (beef & kailan and cashew nut chicken) and a free side of your choice with soup & rice. Hahah! Forgot to mention that the cashews were replaced with peanuts. We ordered the roti canai free side and it was pretty good. Fluffy fried dough with curry dip.
We haven't been there since, but I think if you're at Richmond Centre and have an iced milk tea craving, just cross Westminster Hwy and you're here. Not bad at all....and I'm a sucker for HK cafe foods. |

Added Oct 31, 2008 by all4movies of Richmond (13 Reviews) garlic anyone? The atmosphere was similar to the Honolulu restaurant that was previously here. Typical HK cafe.
I found the added malaysian flavours an interesting addition to the HK cafe style of food. I had the steak and rice combo and was impressed by the very garlicky sauce on top.
Good value and love the garlic.

Added Mar 16, 2008 by sinner of North Vancouver (74 Reviews) Good Cheap HK Eats A colleague and I ate here for lunch yesterday. We shared three dishes for about 20 bucks plus tip... pretty sweet deal. Singapore vermicelli was quite good and plentiful, hainanese chicken was bland and the seafood noodle "mini-wok" was just OK. Service was quite quick but the menu has a couple of issues with it... Many menu items which are nearly identical and interchangeable and there are NO vegetable dishes whatsoever... Trust me, I looked. Service was pretty good for an asian restaurant. Come here if you're in the neighbourhood, but don't come out of your way... |

The food can get greasy, but very tasty. With a variety of menu items to chooses from, I'm sure you can find something of your liking. |

Added Feb 22, 2008 by adidaf of Richmond (64 Reviews) good late night deals Their late night meals great deals. Good sized meal with drink for $8 (sometimes less) and that includes tax and tips. Most things taste ok, although I stick to the curries and baked rice/pasta items. The fried rice and noodles I find too greasy. Service isn't great but they are fast and efficient. Wish the place was a bit cleaner though. |

Added Jan 28, 2008 by epicurious of Burnaby, BC (523 Reviews) I prefered the old Honolulu. As much as I would have liked to agree with the previous reviewer, I did not have a great dining experience at lunch here there other day. It wasn't horrible, but I thought it was better as Honolulu (mind you, last time I was here when it was still Honolulu, I received really crappy service). I got here close to noon on Friday and there was barely anyone in there (never the case before). We were "greeted" by a server with a lazy finger beckon as she continued with her conversation with the other table. Menus were thrown onto the table shortly after.
I think the only positive things I could say about this place are that the restaurant looked clean and the prices were good.
The food...you could do much better elsewhere in Richmond. |

Added Jan 21, 2008 by chasiubow of North Van (673 Reviews) Solid HK food Mrs. C craved HK comfort food, and so did I. We thought Richmond would offer the best selection, so off in the chasiucruiser we drove, heading for where the food is. The double G looked inviting, and there was parking. That decided the matter.
This place bills itself as a HK and Malaysian café, and that may be, but this time we had HK food. The restaurant is nice enough and looks like a Denny’s, but with a definite HK sensibility. The servers were knowledgeable and fast, and the place was clean including the w/c. The menu was huge and it took several minutes to decide. I finally went with a special of the day, which had a steak, 2 pork satay, and some spaghetti and steamed veggies with soup and dong café. Mrs. C had a combo like mine but with fish and ribs.
The borscht was awesome! That set the tone for the whole meal: tender steak, tasty satay, and perfect side dishes. Yum! Mrs. C reported her food to also be fantastic. We gobbled up the food and felt the warmth of the meal fill our bellies and our souls with delight. Having no amah to cook for us, this is the only way to get the food we crave. And it was dirt cheap, with the two of us eating like tai pans for twenty bucks.
Maybe it was just a matter of the right meal at the right moment, but we were very satisfied.
Recommended.

Added Sep 27, 2007 by makeup_girly of Vancouver (46 Reviews) Best overall in value and food We have been to this restaurant a few times for lunch / dinner. We still leave giggling and rubbing our hands gleefully at how little we have to spend to get pretty darn good food.
We have stuck to the curries, fried noodles and soups so far. We have not ordered other a la carte dishes simply because we have not had the opportunity. We will when we get a chance.
If you are suspcious, get the deal where you pick a drink, soup, entree (pick your entree such as rib eye steak), starch and assorted accompanying goodies--all for about $9. I feel like rubbing my hands together gleefully just thinking about it...
The restaurant gets really busy at lunch and decor is nothing much. Servers are efficient and for the most part pretty good. |

Added Sep 27, 2007 by ono_eats of Richmond (8 Reviews) Nothing special but good enough My husband loves this place because you can get a drink and a meal for under $7 at breakfast and lunch. The best thing is that you can get a cold drink at no extra charge. Breakfast is the standard of 2 eggs, bacon (or some other breakfast meat) and toast (or a Chinese style bun) plus you can add a Hong Kong touch to your breakfast by adding a soup noodle dish.
The ambiance is nothing special but your typical Hong Kong style cafe. The menu is diverse with a Malaysian influence. |

Added Aug 14, 2007 by Pooky of Richmond (15 Reviews) One great dish! This restaurant is in the same building where the old Honolulu Cafe use to be. I think it has the same owners as well.
The setup is pretty much the same as in Honolulu, and they serve many of the same dishes. I would like to point out that their breakfast dishes, though cheap, leave much to be desired.
On to lunch. Their baked dishes come in these metal bowls. I have never seen this in a HK cafe before, so it was kind of neat. But the reason I gave this restaurant a 4 rating is because of their Chicken A La King in Thick Toast. Yes, it sounds kind of strange. I only ordered it after seeing another table order it. It is half a loaf of fresh bread that has been hollowed out. They put the chicken and cream sauce into the hollowed out bread, so the bread acts like a soup bowl. The middle piece that had been scooped out is placed on top. The dish is then baked. The end product looks really cool and it tastes great. And it is under $6!
I would seriously go back to this place just for that one dish. |
