Excellent sandwiches!!!
Wow! I never thought I would ever say wow to a sandwich. I'm not big on sandwiches but decided to give this place a try after seeing the reviews. I had a 1/2 focaccia sandwich with mexican salami (I think they mentioned it is made with tequila), artichokes, other vegetables, cheese etc, olive oil, etc. All I can say is this sandwich was amazing and so full of flavor. We went back the next day to have it again. Highly recommended!

wowww
If I could rate the food 4.5 then I would. Their panini was so yummy that I think I would finish the whole focaccia if I'm not on a diet. It's just a sandwich, but it does not taste like a usual sandwich. The combination of sauces blends well. Their homemade sauce is unique but very tasty. I had the turkey sandwich with provolone cheese and some veggies and sauces. It sounds so so because I had no idea which combination would be good. But then it turned out to be really good. My sandwich was generously stuffed with a high pile of turkey breasts and it only came to 6.50 o 7.50 I can't remember clearly. I must come back someday to have another sandwich.

Greatest Panini ever!

Well I owe you guys on dine here a big thank you! Ive been craving a great panini and oh god i got it!
Ive never had a better sandwich in my life. And thats why i rated this place a 5 for the food.
I got the turkey, the pesto mayo, the smoked mozzerella, the honey mustard and all the veggies on a half foccacia. I got it drizzled with the balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Yumm it gave it just the right after taste. It was so authentically italian me and my companion were gushing over how delicious the paninis were the whole meal.
The value was fantastic! for two people + a drink it came out to 15$, thats as cheap as subway or some other crappy sandwich place. Really great value! Service was friendly and ambience.. well you dont go for the atmosphere or a place to sit as there are only two tables outside that are usually full, you go for the sandwich! Also if your a cooking kind of person they have excellent authentic italian products inside (Specifically i remember a wall of olive oils!) a foodies dream, but dont expect to be impressed by the ambiance.
YUMMMMY I WANT ONE RIGHT NOW!

My favourite deli
I agree with everyone else. Why do I even need to bother with this post? Because I want to talk about the fact that in their pasta selection, they have spelt pasta and other Low Gluten options. Also, they are locally, family owned and operated- one of the few ancient Italian shops left in 'little Italy'. This place makes me wish I knew how to speak Italian.

There are actually two tables there- on the sidewalk. Most of the time there are already people sitting there. If it's sunny, I'd say walk over to Grandview park to enjoy your sandwich on the grass.

Very, very good sandwiches!
I was craving a good sandwich and remembered hearing about this place a few days ago, so I thought I'd try it out. And am I ever glad that I did! I went in not really having any sort of preference of what I wanted in my sandwich so I told the girl there to surprise me with something that has meat.

As I waited I was offered some cheese slices to snack on and before I knew it, the sandwich was all done. For less than $9 (with taxes) I got a 4 pound, half foccocia sandwich stuffed full of turkey deli meat, cheeses and veggies of all kinds and a $2 cane cola.

I will definitely be back here very soon since I want to try some of the other things they have to offer as well.

Best Sandwich Ever !!
I ordered a large sub which I think was $ 7.95. One person can get two meals from this sandwich. Great fresh vegetables, excellent bread and some good roast beef. The server was really friendly but you can't eat there as it is a grocery store/ deli. I will be back there every time I am in the area.

Great sandwiches!
I definitely agree with the last reviewer-- awesome paninis at good prices. Their selection of meats/fillings are tasty and numerous. But make sure you go early because the variety of bread decreases as it gets later in the day.

The staff don't smile very much but they aren't rude or anything. Just wish they'd be more friendly. Service is pretty quick and efficient.

You get pretty good bang for your buck here. The cost of a sandwich (depending on which size you choose) is about the same of that at a Subway or Quizno's, but you get far better value in taste and quality.

With regards to the ambiance-- it's a deli. You order and pay at the counter. The wall shelves behind you are filled with yummy goods. My only wish is that there was seating within the deli to sit down and enjoy my hot-from-the-panini-press sandwich, rather than have to eat it in my car or wait until I get home.

Insane!
I have been coming here for a while now, and every time I finish the sandwich I can't believe how freaakin good it is! If you haven't been you must go! But, it's not for people who want the regular "Subway" toppings; it has options like roasted peppers, grilled artichokes, delicious cheeses... mmmm. Seriously check it out.

One of the best Sandwiches I have ever had.
Read some reviews on this place..walked by many times without realizing it was more than a cheese shop. Sadly,I wish I had entrered these premises long ago. I encountered a young lady behind the counter "Adeana" {Probably misspelled}.. was very polite, friendly and told of all the veggies I could add to the sandwich I chose, artichokes, grilled peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, and a few other choices.I had the turkey and hot cappicolla sandwich..which she suggested I try grilled. "The sandwich".. It was Soooo tastey!!I had provolone cheese as well as edam inside it..Very polite helpfull staff here. The other two ladies behind the counter were quite pleasant as well.Sadly...no place to sit in this Italian deli.. I enjoyed my sandwich thouroughly when I returned to work that day. Looking forward to returning here!

Best paninis anywhere!
An Italian guy recommended the sandwiches to me and boy was he right in saying they were tasty! So you get your choice of a roll or focaccia, choice of meat and cheese, and then you can add whatever toppings you want: eggplant, mushrooms, grilled peppers, then they top it off with olive oil and vinegar, press it, and presto! You have the best sandwich you'll ever taste! As other people have said, there's no seating area so get it to go. Mmmm.... just thinking about it makes my mouth water.

Ditto, ditto, ditto - love the sandwiches, but no room to eat 'in'
Reviewers on dinehere are usually pretty consistent with one another when it comes to any particular restaurant - I would pay attention when so many people say the same thing.

This place IS great for sandwiches - esp. paninis. I love the grilled veggies and I won't say more b/c it's all been said. Grad a sandwich & grad cheese, but grab it to go, b/c it's not really set up for alot of eating in. The line ups can also get a bit long here and the service is just okay - getting a sandwich can take awhile.

This is not SUBWAY or Quiznos, this is SOOOOOOO, so, SO, much BETTER!

Incredible sandwiches!
Hanging around the Drive, I decided to have lunch and remembered this spot.

Food: Sandwiches, sandwiches and sandwiches. Sure, they have some other deli items and delis but, for a quick bite, sandwich is the keyword. You choose the bread, dressing (oil, mayo, mustard, et al), veggies, meat and cheese. Unlike a previous reviewer, I requested gouda (not in their cheese list) and they were happy to accomodate me. Was I lucky? Finally, you can have it "as is" or grilled. And for ~$7.00, I had a half-focaccia sandwich with a lot of veggies and deli meat.

As for service and ambiance, this is not a sit-down restaurant; as mentioned above, it is a deli. As a result, I didn't have any expectations for those two.

Overall, if you are in the area, definitely drop by. I am certain I will do that. And, as another reviewed mentioned, grab some cheese, as well!

Great sandwiches & cheese!
We've been coming here for fennel crackers for a few years and the occassional chunk of cheese. We tried the sandwich today -- a nice big focaccia with capicollo, grilled as it should be. Not even remotely disappointed. This is a great sandwich! Not the cheapest in town at $9.50 for the large but it was worth it. As others have said before me, this is a must-try. And grab some cheese while you're there; it's cheap.

Great value for great tasting sandwiches!
It's most definitely a great bargain here for the quality of meats & choice of veggies & cheese you get here from the sandwich bar. Most definitely, the artichokes, grilled peppers, eggplants and variety of quality cheeses makes the sandwich as great as it is. Well, there's all that tasty deli meat, too!

I only come to buy sandwiches, but if I were in need of some good old deli cuts, I'd choose La Grotta for my party platter needs!

A small is very filling for $4 all veggie, or $4.50 with choice of meats in a nice round bun, while there are several sizes up in longer subs and then there's the choice of using their focaccia bread instead.

Service is friendly and quick. They toast your bun up for you so if you don't want it toasted, be sure to let them know as by default sometimes, they end up tossing it onto the grill.

Best deli!
I've heard many good things about La Grotta from the locals on 'the drive' and since I don't go there often, I was excited to give them a try this afternoon.
The set-up of the deli is great. Huge variety of great cheeses, oils, vinegars, breads...it's awesome.
I order a small meat sandwich. Got to choose my meat, cheese, toppings, and sauces. I chose smoked turket, emmenthal, basil pesto mayo with oil & vinegar and toppings like olives and marinated artichokes!! They grilled my sandwich and on the drive back to work, I couldn't stop myself from drooling! My first bite was heaven. Artichokes made a nice flavor and the meat was 3/4"stacked!!!
Eventhough I asked for a small, I was stuffed by the last bite.
Give it a try and you'll see for yourself why La Grotta is the best deli!

Best sandwich
The best sandwich in town. Freshly made in front of your eyes and grilled to perfection. The cheese selection is also remarkable. Staff is a bit rude though. I've had one of them told me I'm too busy to slice you the cheese you want. Can't you choose anotherone?

great sandwiches and cheeses
This is the place to go for a fresh made sandwich. Fresh bread, you choose the meat, cheese, and toppings, such as red peppers, artichokes, pickled eggplant, pesto mayo.... awesome! Great value too. While you're in there, pick up some great cheese, or some fresh italian pasta an other specialty items. Olive oils, vinegars, etc. Great little shop all around.
