The husband & wife team who run this little sushi joint used to run a sushi restaurant on Main St. which is currently occupied by Simply Delicious ( I think? ). I haven't seen this tagteam couple for about 8 years and in the past we did enjoy the friendliness and warmth they always offered us.
Let me go on to cover my basic impressions:
(a) The food wasn't very good, pretty big rolls i.e., salmon/tuna/california, the rice was too mushy without proper seasoning resulting in an off taste. The seaweed was too chewy as well.
(b) Service was pretty standard as we did a take out, they are polite and they do smile :) Hard to get this aspect wrong and unfortunately lots of take out places do :(
(c)The value was not quite there given the somewhat substandard quality of their food.
(d)The atmosphere inside is that of a very-frugal-put-in-cheapy-plastic-tables-cheapy-wooden/plastic-chairs-and-jam-in-as-many-as-possible-given-the-small-space. Not a great place to dine in if you're one who is interested in great views ( J.O. High School is there for your main viewing pleasure ) or authentic Japanese decor. These guys are your ubiquitous non-Japanese made sushi-tors, Chinese. You could just as easily substitute Chinese for Korean, Vietnamese et al, sushi in Vancouver is becoming the fast food du jour.
On a side note, IMHO, there's nothing wrong with non-Japanese sushi places making my sushi, it is most important though that they have the food tasty and of good quality. Wakame Sushi fails here. |

I just happened to be in the neighbourhood and I was STARVING. Little did I know that I would order waaaay too much. The quality of the sashimi is excellent and unlike some places it was actually at a good temperature and not frozen. The portions are incredible. I was very surprised that they accepted credit cards. Usually places like this keep their prices low by not accepting credit cards and go the "CASH ONLY" route. I've recommended this place to all my colleagues and family. Try it out, just don't go during lunch time, they get massive business from the High School next door. |

Staff was kind enough to inform me that I had ordered too much food, which was true. Dynamite combo came iwth dynamite roll, california roll, and spicy tuna roll, though I replaced my spicy tuna with tamago. California was great - shredded properly, dynmaite was fine, tamago was decent. Scallop was good too. Rolls were HUGE. It is nearly impossible to eat more than 2 rolls. I ordered four, which was WAY too much.
Bubble tea surpizingly good and fresh as well for a decent price. Usually places that have food and bubble tea often don't make good bubble tea.
Great service as well, we stayed for a long time just sitting there and they didn't mind at all. Definately a place to go back to! |

The service is warm and friendly. The rolls are huge!! The prices are low. You can easily fill yourself and have a beverage here for around $5. Refreshingly, there are options on the in-house menus that you just won't find anywhere else. But take your time and be observant as the menu is spread around on the walls and it is not the same as what is on the take out menu!
One example of these unique creations is the Nobody Home Roll. It is a giant California Roll baked with Salmon on top and smothered in Spicy Mayo sauce for about $6.50, if memory serves me right? This roll is to die for delicious and makes a great sharing dish. If you try it on your own you better be seriously hungry as it is quite big.
I will let you discover their other creations for yourselves...
The downside is even when eating in all food is served on take out wares, not the most eco-friendly or tantalizing option.
