Fish was good
We had two pieces of halibut and chips. The batter on the halibut was light and crisp. The fries weren't very good though. They were kinda hard (under cooked?) and soggy. The popcorn shimp were good though. Service was attentive and I really liked the ambiance and feel of the place. We were there on a lovely Sunday afternoon and barely had to wait at all for a table. Diners who showed up 5 minutes after we did had to wait though.

GOOD Fish & Chips
Come here for decent fish & chips with good variety (Cod, Halibut or Salmon) we prefer the halibut. Make sure you specify LITE batter for a better/less-greasy/less-filling fish. LUV the freshly "chipped" potatoes although the lil' bits are frustrating (2 dredge in ketchup). Coleslaw, also very nice.

We come here often - but beware of line-ups on weekends especially if weather is nice

Well we liked it
Came here with one of my friends a couple of weeks ago. What else is there really to order besides fish and chips. My friend had one or two pieces of the battered cod fish and I think fries as well, while I had the pan fry fish and fries.

The service wasn't terrible, but nothing to write home about (waited a bit) I must say though that the food tasted really good and we both left happy.

The price? well a little expensive, I think they charge $4.75 for an additional piece of fish if you want another piece (I think $3.50 is what they should really charge)

I'm sure we will be back again.

Used to be really good
My bf and I have been eating at dave`s almost every other week end for a long time, and always enjoyed it, however for some reason, our last couple of visits, we`ve noticed how the quality of their fish n chips have gone downhill. the first time we noticed it, the fish was dry, and we thought it was just that day, and two week-ends later, we returned, and noticed that their fish did not look like it used to be , the batter seemed a little off. we were wondering if they changed their recipe or have new cooks and are not doing things right. so i hope the manager or owner of dave`s will read this and do something and turn things around and make dave`s the best place for fish n chips again!

Mediocre Fish and Chips
My friend and I ordered take-out of two halibut pieces, two large fries, and two drinks, after a fun stroll through the Steveston Farmer's Market. There isn't much of an ambiance, as we sat at the picnic tables directly outside the pick-up station.
The fish was fresh and filling. It was a nice golden brown, but it was too greasy. Oil would squirt out at each cut of the fish. The tartar sauce was passable, but given that it is a staple of fish and chips, shouldn't the cook try to make it delicious?
The fries were the most disappointing. They tasted as if old leftover fries were mixed in with a few new fries. The bulk of the fries were cold; they tasted dry, and stale. I used at least 8 packets of ketchup to give them some semblance of flavour. Perhaps the owners are taking the customers for granted; the restaurant draws crowds, because of the great location, which is enough for them to make food with no taste or pride.

The dinner cost 21.00 including drinks. I will not go there again.

Dirty place, Greasy food..... just not worth it
Pajo's was closed to so we tried daves. We got seated immedieatly and ordered. I had the halibut, wife the popcornshrimp. Place was very greasy and quite diry. Couple of flies lounging about. Wifes shrimp seemed to be the frozen variety, my fish was bland and greasy. The fries were not that great either. The portions were generous.

Will probably not go here again. BTW they do have an all you can eat thing goin on mondays I think

World Famous?
The only thing world famous about this enterprise is that as many people as possible should be dissuaded from purchasing anything until Dave, or whoever is in charge starts taking notice of what is being said about this Diner.I'm from the UK and i can assure anyone with any taste, that The Brits would run away in droves from Dave's!In my six years in Richmond, i have tried this restaurant twice. In each case i was appalled at the service (surly) the food (greasy and inedible, and even for a fish and chip place no variety, eg pies?)the ambiance (tense to say the least)value (for non home made items to be anywhere near my plate i believe is scandalous). Trust me, a trip to Cockney Kings in New West, is well worth the time and trouble it takes to get there.Pa Jo's is very good all round too.Needless to say we will not be returning until Dave's management team rethink their operation.

Greasy Goodness
Visited Dave's for lunch on a friday afternoon, there was a slight wait despite there being free tables, as the servers were not cleaning them. After the short wait we got seated and I ordered the 2 piece cod and chips. Good value for price around $11 for 2 big pieces of fish, scoop of coleslaw and fries.

Freshly fried and greasy. not bad fish and chips for steveston, but i think I prefer Pajos. They do have a larger menu here for deep fried seafood including clam strips

mediocre fish and chips
Came here for a Saturday lunch a little while ago. Had the halibut and chips and my friend had them too. The fries were a little soggy and the fish itself was pretty greasy. I have had better fish and chips and chain restaurants.

The place is not so clean, my table was a little sticky, and everything looked pretty old. The bathroom was pretty dirty, one of the worse i have been to.

Service was minimal but present. It was packed when I was there, don't know why, as it isn't a good value and the food wasn't that good.

Would not return.

I also wished I read the reviews before going
Disappointed...

'bout sums it up.

We had tried to come here a while back in the summer but the place was packed. I put that in the back of my head as usually when you have to wait 45 minutes at a diner the food ain't bad. So we arrived here after we decided that Mc Donald's just wasn't gonna cut it (boy were we wrong).

Lets start, its a nice place, pretty clean besides the black dried ketchup lid and leaking vinegar on the table.

We were seated and drink orders placed. All seemed well so far. Then we ordered...

Myself I went on a limb and tried the "Xtreme Poppers" Mistake number one. I did expect some sort of frozen jalapeno popper concoction-snack, but a Costco special? Come on. I could have had a whole box for less than they charged for these. The coleslaw was alright, as was the fries. Nothing special, nothing bad. Reminded me more of what you would get at a concession stand. Not a diner.

For my fiancee, it was different. She ordered a "World Famous" one piece of halibut. The staple of fish-n-chip shops... Firstly, it arrived without tarter... This struck us as odd as it's a FISH N CHIPS shop, usually tarter is pretty free flowing...So she asked and it arrived after the airy waitress remembered on her third pass by the table. To top it off, its very upscale KRAFT tarter, nothing home made, nothing even special, just a dollop of soybean oil based crap.

Then the actual "fish" The portion was actually quite large and looked quite tasty (from my perspective) until however you cut it open and the grease starts to flow... This was by far the greasiest and bottom soggy fish I have ever seen or tasted. My fiancee is now regretting ordering it (and I'm regretting suggesting the place) as the grease is upsetting her stomach (as well mine).

As some reviewers have stated here before, 'there are too many good restaurants in Vancouver and area to waste time and money here".

Sub-par food, mediocre service, and no reason for this place to hold a "World Famous" title guarantee's that I won't be back.

Is this supposed to be good?
Aaah, I wish I read all this before we headed there. The place looks like a little hole in the wall, but clean enough.
We managed to beat the rush, but my gosh, was it slow. Even though there were empty tables, it took a while to get us seated because the hostess/waitresses just weren't on top of their game. Running very inefficiently and not terribly friendly either.

The food came ... okay, slightly on the slow side based on what it is. We had some halibut, clam strips, chips... So, the food was actually okay. The chips are decent, nothing to write home about. The coleslaw was actually okay too. The fish? Not bad and it was very generously sized and not too overly battered (though I could still do with less). A bit surprised by it actually.

Unfortunately, there's not much to choose between this place, Go Fish and Pajo's (or even Mr. Pickwick's for that matter) that I can recall. Unlikely to be returning, it just isn't outstanding enough and the service, well, sucky. In the meantime, still searching for really, really good fish 'n chips here...

The first but the last try
Me and my bf decided to give a try since we always see line up outside out resturant when we came to the area. we had scallop, prawn, oyster, and cod and poutine... the cod was good despite it was a bit of oily. the scallop, prawn and oyster was average....nothing special. their coleslaw is tasteless. The service was not good as the server didnt give us water and didnt do refill until we asked her too. I wont go back in the future but try out other resturant in the area.

Disappointed
We've been going here for years because of the good food and the convenience of location. Today was my last visit, however, when the halibut was obviously cod - my friend couldn't eat it. The waitress said 'it happens all the time that it's mistaken for cod'. Is there something wrong with this picture? From the Eastern seaboard of Britain, you can't fool us. Too bad. Will go over to Pajo's from now on.

Good for the Winter
I still prefer Pajo's during the summer but Dave's can come close if you ask for the light batter. Clam chowder is good if you order it early enough. Don't like the many tiny left-over chips they give you in the take-out orders. And why do they charge for Tartar sauce?

I don't get it...
how is this place popular with locals? Well, not with this local. I will stick with the always fresh & good Pajos. The fish and chips here taste like they are pre-cooked and warmed before serving. Not very appetizing. It is a busy place but I really don't get it. There are better places on the pier.

Average...
After hearing and reading of the raves for this place, I decided to give it a shot. The restaurant has a separate take-out section which I opted for to avoid to crowd. The place serves cod, salmon, and halibut for fish. The salmon left something to be desired. It didn't have the softness that "white fish" tend to have. The onion rings are the fast-food type variety -- small and has a strong onion taste with the after taste of deep fried oil.

As for price, it's reasonable for the serving size, but not what I'd call cheap. If I had to choose, I'd go for Dave's over Pajo's (a nearby competitor).

Disappointing
The was our first time here. The service was slow. The staff were liking the walking dead. The ambiance was humdrum; not a friendly atmosphere. When the server brought our fish and chip he apologized for the small portion and said he would be back with more fish; never to return. If he felt the order was too small why didn't he tell the kitchen to put another piece on the plate. When we told the waitress about it she said must be a miscommunication because she wasn't aware of it. She said she would check with the manager as she walked away with our plates and forks. One piece of fish with small order of fries $8.20, a little steep. I have been to other places where they bring you two pieces because the first piece is small. This will be our last time there.

Best Fish and Chips even the British say so
Been eating here for over 20 years and still find its the best. May have new staff here and there but they are always doing their best to keep the food tasting great and looking good. Even my friends from England like it better then home, not nearly as greasy as back in England. Service is about the same as any other place, I enjoy the surroundings as it is casual. I don't take away food often but when I do its always ready within 15 minutes unless it is a busy night which in understandable. Overall I would recommend this place to everyone, you will enjoy it.

great fish & chips
I have eaten fish & chips at Daves for over 20 years. I go there every month. I have eaten at other fish & chip restaurants in the lower mainland and return to Daves because they are the best.
The fries are fresh cut fries not frozen. The staff is great. Coffee is great. But folks this is a fish & chip restaurant and not Hyes. It has simple surroundings located in a historic area of Steveston. It is worth visiting. After eating go up to the docks for a nice stroll.t

Fish and chips aint bad
Ah Good old Dave's I've had many a takeout meals from this place whenever I have a huge family get together.
Experience inside the restaurant maybe a bit more of a laid back feel.
The fish itself is battered a bit heavily. I am a happy that the gravy servings are huge. Make sure to have a separate order of fries including what came as a side for the main order or your going to have a lot of wasted gravy. Service is a bit sluggish but they were still pleasant. Kind of hard to believe that they couldn't take our order when there was only 3-4 customers in the place....

I'd go for the fish and chips!
I found the food to be good. The prices are a little high but, thats usually the case for fish and chips resturants. I'm not sure what the person was thinking when she said the take out place takes 30 mins. I usually go to the take out area and wait 10 mins.. sometimes 15 if they're busy. I'm not a fan of oyster's so I can't comment on them but i usually get halibut and chips which is pretty good to my standards. I recomend this place to any fish and chip lover.

Don't come for the fish & chips, but the oysters
I have stopped going to Dave's because the batter keeps getting thicker, fish smaller, and prices higher. I'm writing this review because I happened to see that someone recently reviewed this joint!

We used to do takeout from here about twice a month for a period of 5 months. I tried to dine in once but they were already closed (about 8pm).

The take-out takes forever, ok, I'm being dramatic. But 20 minutes is usually not enough for them to have your takeout packed and ready. It's closer to 30 minutes, at least.

Despite that Fish & Chips is in their name, fish & chips are probably the worst thing on their menu. I would not recommend them at all. However, the fried oysters are really good, especially with the red cocktail sauce they serve with it, as are their onion rings. Dave's tartar sauce is really good too, but since I don't recommend trying their fish...

The service is pretty amateur, but cut them some slack since they appear to be teenagers, with the average age of 17. But, I was irked when we asked one of these teens working the takeout counter for a menu. He told us that he wasn't allowed to give out any menus right now because the owner just raised the prices and some people got upset that they weren't being charged at the old prices. Okaaaaaaay....

I have not been back there for a few months. I probably will when I get a hankering for the fried oysters.

banal - campy name to lure in the simple types
I've commercial fished for many years and so far have only had decent fish & chips in Seattle, and many years ago (not Ivars, which is a burn in portionsize and price), in small places on the waterfront, one place where the oysters were as big as your fist (tangy, not "what's-the-point-of-liking-them"-mild) and the fries were baked quarter-lengths of potatoes! "Dave's" like a "Barbs" on the dock in Vic. is 'you'll leave hungry' unless you eat the massive amounts of oily hard batter and banal chips and, under the batter, there's the chintzy small piece of frozen for weeks (taste the tell all there) and weeks fish. Lower Mainland and Victoria may have fair fish and chips places, but I havn't found any yet!
