My husband and I went to Ricky's recently for dinner because we had a coupon and thought we'd give it a try. We have been to the Nanaimo location a number of times for breakfast and enjoy it. I had a fairly boring pasta with pesto sauce and garlic toast. He had a burger with caesar salad. Both of us had a pop. Even with a coupon, it was $44 with tip! You can go to a fine dining restaurant for that price! The food wasn't great for the prices! The atmosphere wasn't great, and the service was just ok. I will definitely go back to the Nanaimo one for brekkie, but I would give this one a pass. |

Got a coupon - should try something new. Wish we hadn't.
Friday night and we thought we'd try this place. Unlike many other places it was dead on Friday evening with only 5-6 tables occupied. The decor was sad and it felt unloved and unwanted. The menus are huge with a very wide variety of meals from burgers, to pasta to steak. Prices were reasonable on most things but there were a few things that I thought were overpriced for this price point.
We sampled pizza (which looked the best of all the meals), Chicken Souvlaki and Veal with a slop of gravy embedded with tons of mushrooms (and cold mashed potato).
None of the meals tasted very good and the server could not help notice that we had eaten very little. She did try and ask what the problem was and we begged off by saying we were not hungry. Cowards. Frankly, I cannot put my finger on what exactly the problem was (which is unusual for me). There's no question the food tasted, well - old. The vegetables and meat were wilted and very sad looking and cold mashed potatoes just are not good and the heavy gravy did little to improve things.
So - all in all, I have to write off tonight's adventure off as a loss. Too bad and so sad but there are other places that can shine and are a pleasure to eat at. This isn't it and we are wiser now. Best of luck if you go - and do report. I hope I just hit a bad evening. |
