The place was packed, a host quickly took our name and we were seated in a couple minutes. The menu feeling like a small novel loaded with culinary chapters had many choices. I settled on the number 6, It was 2 types of noodles(egg and rice) with beef chicken prawns vegis and a soup. Also ordered this red bean ice jelly drink that was simply orgasmic. The food came out in around 5 minutes which is unbelievable for how busy this place was. This place knows what its doing and does it well. A authentic taste of the far east at a great price makes this marver a happy camper. Bill came to 12 dollars before tip, I was stuffed and happy. A true gem. |

Added Aug 5, 2009 by dal of van (34 Reviews) Some good dishes... Everything that is yummy is also unhealthy.. my fave picks: deepfried wings, deep-fried squid... Oyster pancakes were gross- and really greasy.. keep in mind that I love fried food :-( The rice isn't anything special, the frog legs weren't very good, and I found the dry noodle dishes bland.... I tried their 'famous' beef/sashimi dish.. again, nothing to get excited about... |

They have recently raised their prices making the price go from expensive to ridiculous. I can't justify the cost anymore. Also, when you order the chicken wings, they give you the tips of the wings and count that as one peice. Very tacky and stingy on their part. |

I love the chicken wings at Phnom Penh, everytime I go its almost a given that every table has a plate of their deep fried chicken wings with lemon and pepper sauce on the side, its soooooo good, the deep fried chicken wings with rock salt and pepper taste is truly amazing! I also like the salad rolls, and beef with vermicelli dish where you mix the carrots and cucumbers with everything and pour fish sauce on top. They make great iced coffee too. Every lunch and dinner is packed, theres a normally a 5-10 min wait, but so worth the wait! |

Added Jul 6, 2009 by Rasputin of Downtown (3 Reviews) Outstanding This is one of Vancouver's best hidden gems, even though it is not so hidden anymore (they have been reviewed in the New York Times after all!)
The food is, in a word, outstanding. There is a huge variety and selection, and it is almost impossible to choose from their 7+ page, 12 point font menu in reasonable time. A word of advice: if it's your first time there and you're overwhelmed by the selection, let the server choose for you, which is what I did (it may have been the manager actually.) Every dish we received was incredible.
Also make sure to go with at least 4 people so you can all sample a reasonable number of dishes, as each are quite large and intended to be shared around.
Some nights you can experience quite a wait, and you have to be careful because the restaurant closes quite early (I think they don't let anyone in after 9pm.) In this case you either have to be patient, or make a reservation beforehand.
The layout is a bit underwhelming as it more resembles a cheap Chinese restaurant, and the menu might seem overpriced in comparison at first. But once you taste it, you will agree you're actually getting great value given the quality of the food.
I have taken many many different parties here, and everyone has always been very impressed. In case it helps, here are some of the best dishes I have tried: -"Grandmother's recipe" garlic fried squid -Garlic fried prawns -Hot and sour fish soup -Phnom Penh noodles (get dry with soup on side) -Butter beef - like an asian style beef carpaccio, amazing |

Added Jun 25, 2009 by maelstrom of West End (9 Reviews) Go for the food if you can stomach the service. I had been wanting to check out Phnom Penh for some time as I’ve heard so much about their amazing squid dishes. I was finally able to get there on April 22 and was pleased to see that, for a Monday night, the place was humming. This had to be a good sign. Now I was dining by myself and I soon discovered that Phnom Penh isn’t the place for a solo diner. The prices are somewhat on the steep side and their combo selections were few (three in total) and really quite limited in variety. After reviewing the menu I decided what I wanted and waited and waited and waited before I was finally able to get my order taken. I felt like it was a battle to get my order taken.
I ordered a noodle dish and a squid dish and was able to justify the expensive by telling myself that I would get lunch for tomorrow out of the leftovers. The noodle dish arrived first, but it wasn’t the particular noodle dish that I had ordered. Here’s where it gets interesting. I noticed a waitress approaching with my correct noodle dish, but she saw the other one on my table, looked at me and hastily figured that I hadn’t noticed the mix up so just turned around and walked away with the correct noodles. Unbelievable! Instead of just owning up to the mistake, which wasn’t really even a big deal, they just thought that I wouldn’t know the difference. What a great business model for an eating establishment. Subterfuge dining!
Service is incredibly weak at Phnom Penh and this is largely due to their approach. There are a plethora of servers and you pretty much deal with someone different every time. A different person sat me at my table, took my order, dropped off tea, delivered each dish and brought the bill. A few were friendly, a few were surly and the others didn’t really seem to care too much. Hon’s does this service approach well and does it with efficiency and with a cheerful staff. The management of Phnom Penh could learn a bunch from them.
The squid dish was great by the way and was some of the best I’ve ever had. It’s really too bad that the front of house service blows it for the talented cooks in the kitchen.

The crab cakes were ok although didnt taste much crab and the curry chicken was good reminded me of prata mans but had a more sweet coconut flavor. Arrived before the saturday night rush so service was good. This place never seems to disappoint when it comes to the food so highly recommended! |

The waiters/ waitresses need to smile more
The food is good, been going with my family ever since I was a kid. Food is still good as ever! Consistent.

Added May 22, 2009 by peenutbuta of Vancouver (3 Reviews) Been coming for over 10 years now... A restaurant my family loves going and has been going since I was a child. The food never disappoints.
I always get the usual, dry rice noodle (extra large + fried egg) and it always tastes great. I use to go to the phnom penh on broadway since it's closer but now that it's closed we still make our way down to this location at least once every two weeks.
The service is what you usually get from a typical asian restaurant. Some of the new waitresses can act a little cocky at times and forget orders but since the restaurant is always so busy, I guess that's understandable
The value is great. I can always order my main dish plus a couple others (half order chicken wings + shrimp salad roll) and in the end it would only cost a bit over $12. Now I eat a lot so for a normal customer, I'd say the average would range from about $7-10 dollars.
Ambiance has been pretty much the same, it's nothing special but I always enjoy being in there since it's always crowded with happy people enjoying great food at a great price
This place is a must-try and you will definitely not be disappointed. A restaurant that will forever be in my mind whenever I wanna grab a tasty bite to eat. |

My husband ordered the Phnom Pho and he says was good. The restaurant is clean, the server girl was attentive, she actually suggested what we ordered and those dishes were really popular as I saw many people ordering the same. |

Added Apr 13, 2009 by bumblebee7 of Vancouver (28 Reviews) always good food... I remember going to the place growing up... it seems to be as good as always. Though a bit on the pricy side, the food is always delicous.. Filet Beef on Rice is still one of the best (can't seem to find this elsewhere), plus their chicken wings and prawn on sugar cane are always top of my to order list.
It's always super busy at lunch time and dinner on the weekends, so make sure you come early.
Like all family style asian restaurants, there's not alot to say about the service or the ambience. Basically you're there to eat, not to be catered to on hands and knees. They basically take your order and serve you, so don't expect too much. |

Added Mar 28, 2009 by pancakes225 of vancouver (16 Reviews) Consistently good I work around here and go to this place usually 2 x a month. My coworker and I always order the #6 noodles and an entree. Have never been disappointed with their dishes. Highlights are the #6 noodle dish, #56 steamed crepe rolls and the 2 fried rice dishes. I see lots of people ordering the deep fried prawns, the deep fried chicken wings and the rare beef dish but I'm not a fan of these. Service is quick and polite. They'll let you know if a dish you order takes a while to prepare. Restaurant is what you can expect for something in Chinatown and it's a relatively large restaurant. I would suggest getting there at least 15 minutes before noon if you don't want to line up for a table. There's usually lineups every Friday from 12-1 so if you don't get there earlier, be prepared to wait. |

Added Mar 5, 2009 by bigmamadcc of Burnaby North (7 Reviews) Top quality SE Asian restaurant, but needs to review the prices... I simply put everything this way: Foods are incredibly outstanding; service is great, clean and well-kept. But the some of the dishes are unreasonably over-priced. For example: A-mok costs 15.50 but comes in small order; Phnompenh style deepfried stuff (chicken, porkchop, squid, etc); well, you can't really tell the difference in sizes but it costs 50% or more for large orders. And, the rare beef plate, well, in San Francisco where living expenses are much higher, the same dish (same size!!!) costs only 7.50 USD, which is about 9.50 CAD but it is 17.70 in this restaurant.
So the owner really needs to think twice and reconsiders the prices...the high prices have drive most of its customer to only either a bow of dried noodle or a rice dish. |

I ate there today, and just like always the food was amazing.
Deep fried Crab rolls are something I crave quite often. We also had the Chicken wings, calamari, Salad Rolls, Ribs, Prawns on sugar cane and of course the Soup. Everything was outstanding.
Service was friendly and efficient.
I will be going back very soon. |

Added Jan 2, 2009 by Wing_Commander of Vancouver (1 Reviews) Beware of the chicken wing scam! There were 6 of us, and for appetizer we ordered the 18 piece chicken wing (highly overrated) platter. When the wings came, in the middle of our meal, we found that the platter consisted of 6 drummettes, 6 wings and 6 wing tips (the worthless bit that sticks out at the end of wings). They are actually passing off wing tips as chicken wings!!
So if you order the 18 piece platter, know that you will be getting 12 actual pieces of chicken wings.
We also had the lemon grass chicken, the luc lac beef and fried rice - which were decent enough, but nothing special and definitely not worth going into one of the sketchiest parts of town, standing in line and then being crammed into an overcrowded, loud and suffocating restaurant.
I am done with this place.

Added Nov 28, 2008 by msterias of Vancouver (5 Reviews) Overrated. I visited the restaurant twice before I decided to review. I had the Beef Luc Lac the first time and the beef was smothered in sauce, even though the traditional version has a rather dry exterior. I also ordered the Vietnamese sour soup on both visits, and the soup tastes a like the real thing! However, the shrimp in the soup are not fresh and lack taste. The lemon grass chicken with rice was also ordered both times, and it was just really mediocre compared to other ones I've tried in a vietnamese noodle house.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. The food is only decent, sometimes bordering on poor. The only thing I commend is their menu. It's probably the most diverse menu I have seen in a vietnamese restaurant. |

After reading the mixed reviews on this site about this restaurant we were a little apprehensive but thought we'd give it a shot anyways. We were pleasantly surprised. We were seated right away and brought complimentary green tea. First impressions of the restaurant were that it was generally clean although both our menus were incredibly sticky. Let's not talk about the cleanliness in the bathrooms though. Our waitress took our order quickly and food arrived just as fast. The portions are generous compared to some comparable restaurants in the area. The food was not the best vietnamese I've ever had but it was yummy and creative and we both left feeling full. Our bill was $45 including drinks and tip (an average bill for us is about $60). The place was PACKED by the time we left with people waiting outside. I would go back again next time we're in the area. |

Added Oct 24, 2008 by chikachikawow of Yaletown, Vancouver (10 Reviews) good food, ok value I've only ordered 4 different dishes from the restaurant Butter beef: EXCELLENT. rare beef, great sauce. Lemon pepper garlic squid: similar to most calamari dishes I've had in chinese and other restaurants. At almost $16 for a large that's like 50% lettuce, it's over priced and it's hard to understand why the dish is listed on 100 things to taste before you die (in vancouver). Beef on rice: a simple, tasty dish. The beef has good flavor, the fried egg is a nice addition. Chicken wings: tastes good cause of the sauce (same sauce as the squid). But has anyone noticed a quarter to half of what you get is just the meatless wing tips? Disappointing.
Now the lemon pepper sauce served with the squid and wings is good but when I was a kid, my mom and grandma made the same sauce. It tastes the same anyway and if it's made the same the lemon comes from the green bottle, not fresh squeezed.
The place gets busy, the food is good, but the prices for some of the dishes are a bit high..or maybe a lot high. Guess it depends on how many wings with meat on it you actually get on a given day. |

Many years later, I've rediscovered a love for this restaurant. Excellent and authentic Cambodian/Vietnamese food... One of the best in town.
Food: Spicy, garlicky, sweet, sour, salty... take your pick. Very authentic and flavourful. Green papaya salad, Chiu Chow fried rice, Hu tieu noodles, deep fried chicken wings or squid are all favourites. My wife and I try to bring friends each time we go so we can get a variety of dishes.
Service: Better than what you'd expect from a restaurant of this price point.
Value: Can't beat it and it shows with the lineups at the door. Over the years, this place has gotten busier and busier.

Added Sep 7, 2008 by k-dawg73 of port coquitlam (62 Reviews) Okay food, kinda overrated Went to this restaurant tonight for my brother's birthday. There were 7 adults and 3 kids and we reserved a table, which was a good idea because after 6:30 pm, there is a line up for a table.
I have to say that after reading the mostly positive reviews on DH, I was pretty psyched to try this restaurant, especially the butter beef and chicken wings. We ordered several dishes and shared them between the adults.
The food came out very quickly and service was pretty good. The butter beef was okay, not sure why they called it butter, as there wasn't any butter to be seen in the dish. Maybe because the meat was as tender as butter. ;-) It came with tons of cilantro and fried garlic and a slightly sweet soya sauce. The chicken wings were good, not great. Crispy, but too salty and I felt very thirsty after eating them.
Had the lemon grass chicken with shredded pork on rice...quite good and a few bowls of beef brisket with noodle soup...that was excellent actually. There were a few other dishes that I can't seem to remember, but they didn't knock my socks off.
The bill came to $95 with tax + tip for 7 adults and 3 kids. Not bad considering another b-day dinner for my other brother at the Keg in Burnaby came out to over twice as much. I did go away kinda hungry afterwards, as did my wife. She thought the food was pretty good, but just not enough of it.
Like the title says, okay food, but definitely overrated IMHO. Probably wouldn't go back. |

Added Aug 25, 2008 by chasiubow of North Van (673 Reviews) chaotic, but good food Mrs. C and I were taking a few visiting relatives for a Vietnamese meal, and we picked this place based on the reviews on the DH site. We had an interesting experience.
The restaurant is in Chinatown, which is usually dead quiet after 6pm. This place was bustling though, and there were patrons spilling out onto the street. That looked like a good sign, so we asked for a big table and waited to be called. After a brief wait, we were in and seated. The restaurant looked clean enough considering the traffic going through, and the staff were all friendly and helpful despite their obvious stress. I never found the w/c, so I can't report on it.
We ordered several bowls of the house beef noodle soup. It was tasty and had beef balls and beef pieces, plus the usual noodles, and some crispy fried onion on top. The soup was good and the noodles were just right. The onions gave it a unique flavor. We also had the house specialty pan-fried squid in onion and pepper which was excellent, and some seafood noodles, which also were very good. I wanted to try their Chinese donuts, but they were out. Maybe next time.
All in all a very satisfying meal. If you don't mind the crowds it is a good choice.

Added Aug 15, 2008 by Salt_n_pepper of Westend, Vancouver (1 Reviews) I am a regular I have been going to this resteraunt for quite some time now. For a while there, I was almost there every 2 weeks for months! I'm a big eater and am very impressed by their selection. I have so many favourite dishes (lemon peppery squid, wings, hot and sour soup, fried rice, etc.) but something that isn't too common is the BUTTER BEEF. If you are squirmy when it comes to rare beef, this is not the dish for you. However, I have introduced this dish to many friends and they also order this dish every time they eat here. The service is whats expected in a busy, fairly decent priced resteraunt. You may have to wait for a seat, but the food makes it so worth it. For the most part, the waitresses are quick and thefood comes out fast. Thats pretty good for such a busy resteraunt! Some people may criticize the resteraunt for not being on the top when it comes to the location or the ambiance but I defnitely feel that it is fairly clean and decent. I have been there on days when I'm super hungry and having to wait for 30mins for a table...but as a regular customer, I know the incredible unique taste of the food - and I'm willing to wait! |

Added Aug 12, 2008 by EatsFats of Vancouver (209 Reviews) Good variety, decent price Haven't been to this since the Broadway location closed a long, long time ago. Oh yes, this is quite possibly one of the crappiest locations in town. Which makes it all the more surprisingly that inside is decently clean and organized and it was absolutely PACKED with customers!
Yes, I'm giving it a 4 star service rating. Not because it matches the finer places in town necessarily, but given how busy they were, the hostess & waitresses are REALLY on top of their game, they don't have the luxury to go at a leisurely pace yet they never miss a beat.
Now the food...vast, vast menu with Cambodian stuff and some Vietnamese stuff. Not sure how authentic the Cambodian is, but it sure is tasty! EVERY table ordered the deep fried chicken wings, they are not to be missed. They are possibly the best fried chicken wings in town. There's many other things on the menu including a lot of noodles & soups. Some are quite inexpensive (as in pho type pricing, packed with noodles), while some specialized dishes are more pricey. We're glad not to have experienced an extreme MSG thirst afterwards, so if they use it, they kept it light.
Yup, for something inexpensive and a good change of pace, should definitely hit this place. I'd be a bit wary about hitting this thing after dark, but that just adds to the excitement. Sure hope to be back... |

Added Jul 10, 2008 by emilyyu1 of Vancouver (8 Reviews) Good Food I ordered the deep fried chicken, a bowl of noodles that had a tomato soup base with beef brisket in it and beef rice(apologies for not knowing their actual English names, my mother ordered the food in Chinese). One thing i love about their deep fried chicken is that it doesn't taste bland and it's juicy. The soup base for the noodles were aromatic and full of flavor; however, i found that the beef brisket was quite tough. The beef rice is also very good, we added some money to add an egg in it and I find that the egg completes the dish.
The service there is very efficient and fast. On busy days, if you are by yourself or with another person you may be asked to share tables with people you don't know.
I would go there again. |

So it makes you wonder whether there are different dishes for non-Asians because everything...the hot and sour soup...butter beed with cilantro...pork chops, egg with rice (not fried), salad rolls was passable but very, very mild, and I'm not an aggressive spice junkie. The ambiance in places like this is always bad and although the service was criticized in other postings, I didn't find it bad given that it was its usual busy place. I can't say that I'll be back and it seems that it's trading on its rep more than anything. UNderwhelming all around with the tea being a rare highlight. Hot and sour soup was sweet and sour and unique and was the top food choice of the night. |

I live in the eastside for years and this is probably my favorite spot for Cambodian/Vietnamese. I have brought my friends, family, and associates here...they all said its good stuff! The combinations are an excellent value and one of my favs. My recommendations are shrimp salad rolls, mini Vietnamese spring rolls, prawn supreme on sugar cane, PP spicy garlic squid with a lime pepper dipping sauce (the BEST), hot and sour soup with chicken, bbq lemon grass pork chops and trieu chow fried rice. The service is good to very good depending when...its very busy and the line ups are long during peak hours. The Ambiance...okay. The food is what its all about!! |

Added Apr 22, 2008 by marspball of Coquitlam (38 Reviews) Amazing food i am very surprised by the mixed reviews on this restaurant. i've been eating at phnom penh for quite a while now and their performance has always been consistent. The food is amazing but you have to what to order. The notable mentions are: -Hot & Sour soup -Deep fried chicken wings -Deep fried crabs (you have to call ahead and order) -Butter beef -House special fried rice -Egg noodles -Oyster omellette If you venture away from these recommendations, then you are on your own.
Reservation is a MUST, especially on weekends. Again, not a fine dining restaurant so expect a suitable service and ambiance. Their location is not prime but food is definitely excellent. |

Added Apr 15, 2008 by hydeeho of Burnaby (97 Reviews) Did not meet expectations After reading all the glowing reviews I expected too much and came away disappointed. 2 bowls of seafood egg noodle in soup and butter beef. While the presentation of the beef was great the taste wasn't. The noodles were okay but I prefer pho anytime over this. Went in at 1:30 pm and the place was packed. A great testament to the following of this restaurant. Service was good. The menu was way too large and was cumbersome also both menus at our table were greasy. Cambodian food is probably an acquired taste which I will never have. |

Added Feb 27, 2008 by kewpiebaby of Vancouver (119 Reviews) Phnom Penh is Phantasmagorical The BEST Cambodian/Vietnamese place ever. Even though it's located in the slightly sketchy part of Chinatown, I've been coming here since I was a little girl. My cousins & I used to come here every other week for lunch/dinner and ordered pretty much the same must haves- Butter Beef, Chicken Wings, and spring rolls.
The butter beef is so tasty with a lime, soy and fish sauce, sprinkled w/ cilantro & fried shallots. You can't help but load equal amounts of everything together to get the full flavors in each bite. The chicken wings are covered w/garlic, salt/peppered and deep fried. The best is the lime pepper dipping sauce that comes with it.
Also try the dried noodle #2 & the spicy beef brisket noodle. Not much has changed in two decades at this place other than trying to fit more tables in the room by taking away the old dividers & updating the falling apart menu. =) Still a lengthy wait during the lunch rush, but it's expected. After the first bite of butter beef, I was in heaven. =) |

Added Feb 3, 2008 by adorablehunnie of East Van, Vancouver (18 Reviews) Good, but not in a very decent part of town This is a Vietnamese/Cambodian restaurant. Their menu is a bit exhaustive. It takes a lot of time to read through and while some dishes are great, others are not and you wonder why it is even on the menu.
The chicken wings are a must order. They are 5/5 awesome. I had clams (which were good but a little bit pricey), pork chop on rice (quite expensive compared to some other Vietnamese places) and another dish I completely don't remember. I wouldn't suggest the pork chop dish. I think I chose the wrong thing to order. I would definitely come back to this place though, to try out some other dishes. You have to flag the waitresses down, but when they do come, they are attentive. Decor is old school and the menus are a bit sticky. Looks like a typical Vietnamese restaurant. |

Added Feb 2, 2008 by discerning_palate of vancouver (34 Reviews) Decent I guess I was expecting to be wowed but ended up being mildly satisfied with no major complaints. The interior relatively clean, service was solid and the food was decent. As the dishes came one by one I dutifully made my way through them, all the while quietly looking forward to the chicken wings with such expectation I could hardly contain myself. Finally the wings were the last to arrive and they were supposed to make the rest of the lunch worth while. Well, they were good. The price makes them especially a good value. They are quite tasty but they have a strange sweetness to them like they added sugar to the coating or something. I’ve had better, namely my moms. I guess she’ll have to teach me how to make them. They have a relatively large menu so I’m willing to go back again to try other dishes but I probably won’t go out of my way anytime soon. |

Added Jan 11, 2008 by Ho in the Wall of Main St. (16 Reviews) Hi Dkona 2 It's a shame - you really did order the wrong things. PP is one of those places where you always get the same stuff because they do it so well you get cravings at least once a month. If you care to venture back, you should try these key items:
1) Deep friend anything - start with the chicken wings. 2) Beef and egg over rice 3) Wet or dry cambodian noodles. If you're adventurous, make sure they don't skimp on the liver for you. 4) Butter beef

Added Jan 6, 2008 by dkona2 of west vancouver (4 Reviews) First tasting here- not impressed This is a busy restaurant. We found a table for two on a late Saturday night and the place was still humming. I don't know why. Did we order the wrong items? We started with the special Cambodian beef soup. It was similar to Vietnamese pho, except the broth was bland. The beef was very chewy. We then tried the dish that contained the word "Amok" and it consisted of seafood, chilis and coconut milk. The resulting dish was essentially one solid mass in a bowl, and it was difficult to discretely identify all that was in the dish (except for the two scallops on top and the cuttlefish inside). Our best dish was the gai lan with beef. The sauce was good and the gai lan was crispy. Again the beef was chewy (sinewy). We both went home on the hungry side as our appetites were somewhat discouraged. The service was reasonable for a busy place. The ambience was average and acceptable. I give this restaurant an overall two star rating because of the food served during our visit. The food was not worth the price of the meal (about $35 with taxes). |

Food: i had the beef stew in tomato sauce. large bowl and lots of beef. it was suppose to be kinda spicy but i didnt find it so. my b/f had the noodles w/ prawn balls. kind pricey but he did get quite a few lrg prawn balls. we both decided next time we'd try something diff't on the menu. we did have the chicken wings and both agreed they were yummy w/ or w/out the lemon sauce.
Service: nothing special. food comes out fairly quick and is fairly english friendly.
Ambiance: looks like they had done some renos since the last time i came which was yrs ago. looks much better! i like the subtle pictures on the walls and they had a nicely decorated tree by the front entrance...the little greenhouse area def cut off some of the cold draft that came in whenever the doors opened.
Overall: still worth giving another try...it's just an excuse to have the wings again! |

I always get the fried chicken wings and papaya salad as a sharing dish. YUMMY~~~~~ After the meal they're really good with cleaning your table and bringing the extra napkins and stuff. When you ask for something you dont have to wait. They bring it right away. (sauces, forks, etcetc) Great place to dine! |

Added Nov 14, 2007 by Cancuk of Vancouver (12 Reviews) Never goes wrong I love Phnom Penh... I eat there all the time, usually for a late lunch after the crowd subsides.
My two favourite dishes:
Beef Noodle Soup is outstanding and WAY better than so many normal Pho places. The flavours are so much stronger, and they add sauteed onions on top... sooo good.
The deep friend squid with lemon sauce? Holy crap. Best deep fried squid i've ever had. The batter is so light (not unlike tempura). It's unreal.
I just had to express me love. |

Added Nov 7, 2007 by fussyeater of Vancouver (10 Reviews) delicious, unique food Sure, you'll find all the mainstays of Vietnamese cooking here, like spring rolls and lemon grass chicken. But you could go to Pho Hoa for those things. What you come here for are the special menu items, like the fried chicken wings in lemon-pepper sauce. And the butter beef (rare-medium rare slices in a soy-vinegar sauce, toasted garlic, cilantro and some dabs of butter). You will get hooked. |

Added Nov 3, 2007 by sinner of North Vancouver (74 Reviews) Good place for cheap eats 5.75 for a hearty pho-style soup is a sweet deal, if you don't mind waiting 20 minutes for lunch. It's not the kind of place you go out of your way to enjoy the ambiance. Phnom Penh seems to be choking on its success.
I have to agree with previous posters though, the crispy wings are really good. There are little bits of garlic clinging on the wings, having survived their immersion in hot oil (that kind of sounds poetic, Mr. Haiku man). I'm looking forward to being a little more adventurous next time I come here. |

I also used to frequent their Broadway and Oak location. Their food quality is consistent excellent. The dishes are tasty and full of flavors. Love their two kinds of dry noodles with broth on the side. Great oyster pancakes and soups. I will continue to visit this place for many more years to come. |

I wasn't crazy about being sharing a large table with other diners that I didn't know, but under the circumstances (busy), I did it all the same.
Ordered the beef noodle soup, the brochette and the fried chicken wings. The soup was very good, the brochette good, and the wings are outstanding. Best chicken wings I've had in a long time.
I'm sure I'll go back to sample some of the other noodle dishes. |

Added Sep 12, 2007 by tastytasty02 of Burnaby (44 Reviews) Sooo Delicious!!!! I'm craving more! Living in Burnaby/Vancouver I should frequent this restaurant more often! This is the 2nd visit that I have made to the restaurant and I am sooo glad I did. After a rollerblade session along the seawall I was famished and excited for Phnom Penh! I wanted to try everything on the menu but my boyfriend (who eats at Phnom Penh all the time) suggested we order three dishes since they are pretty large portions. So we ordered the trieu fried rice, butter beef, and duh....the CHICKEN WINGS!!!!! Fried rice was not anything special but arrived piping hot and smelled so yummy. Chicken wings lived up to the hype and were hot, crispy, and tasty especially with the lemon pepper dip! Now...the BUTTER BEEF!!!! OMG! I seriously love this dish. It combines all my favorite flavours, sour, sweet, and salty. The cilantro/parsley gives it a nice fresh flavour, the beef is soo tender, and the sauce is so tangy...thinking about it makes my mouth water! All in all the service was quite good as it was not too busy but ambiance was lacking. I didn't really care I was too distracted by the food! Yum Yum!! Next time i'm going to try more dishes!!! Totally recommended!!!! |

Added Sep 10, 2007 by doodlebug of vancouver (43 Reviews) Surprisingly clean We visited this restaurant on Sunday night at about 5pm. We got there just before it got super busy. I was surprised to see how clean the place is. We ordered some dry mixed noodles with seafood. They accidentally gave us egg noodles instead of rice noodles. The noodles lacked flavour. Next, the lemongrass chicken. Very good. Love the grilled flavour! We also had the chicken wings. They're not what we expected. Yes, they were crispy and hot, but they're full of MSG and super greasy. We must have had three glasses of water while we were there then had to go get a bottle after we left. We found the servers quite pleasent. They refilled our waters and checked on us regularly. |

Added Sep 7, 2007 by Von_Delroy of New Westminster (26 Reviews) Here's the beef! Due to the outstanding reviews, we decided to try this place when some of our family members were visiting from out of town.
We went around 1pm on a Saturday, and the place was absolutely packed to the brim, with around 10 people already waiting. Considering that, we waited 20 minutes for a table for 5, which wasn't too bad.
We ordered the famous chicken wings, the luc lac beef, lemongrass chicken, beef with noodles, shrimp fried rice and the fried pomfret. It was a little hard for us to order because some people in our party didn't eat pork, and almost everything on the menu had some form of pork in it.
The luc lac beef was phenomenal! It was so tender and juicy, and had a delicious flavour that we had not previously encountered in any other dish. We were still raving about it long after we left.
The lemongrass chicken was delicious, with a nice charcoal-grilled flavour. Everything else was good, but the beef was really the star and kind of outshone everything else.
As for the famous chicken wings that everyone here seems to adore... Well. These ones were hot and crispy, but absolutely chock-full of MSG. We usually love chicken wings cooked in any style, but these were not our cup of tea.
The service was pretty non-existant. The servers looked tired and there were far too few of them to handle the overflowing restaurant. We asked for water refills and napkins from our waitress several times with no results. Finally the bus boy helped us out at the end of the meal.
As for the ambiance, you could barely hear yourself think, much less hear the person across the table say anything. It was just that loud. The decor leaves much to be desired, but this place is really all about the food so that's not really a problem.
Despite it's flaws, this is a good restaurant and definitely worth a try. We'll be back! |

Just sampled a selection of past favorites including crispy wings(an excellent value here), garlic squid with tasty lemon pepper dip, butter beef & steamed rice. It's on the far edge of Chinatown(kinda sketchy outside), but this place is always very bright & clean. Satisfied two of us for about $30. |

Added Aug 20, 2007 by misosweet of Vancouver (11 Reviews) Love Phnom Penh I love the food. The chicken wings are delicious. The butter beef is my new love. Lychee moo shakes are to die for! One of my favourite dishes is #35, the beef and egg over rice. There's plenty of beef, and is so saucy. I always have leftovers to take home because the portion is so big. Some constructive criticism I could offer is to have entree dishes to arrive all at once, rather than 5 minutes after the other. By the time my dish arrived, everybody else at the table had finished theirs! The food keeps us coming back. |

Added Jul 27, 2007 by sjones of Vancouver (13 Reviews) Yum Yum Delicious I just love eating the food here! Nothing more I can add that hasn't been said about the food. My favorites include the garlic shrimp and the fried chicken wings. Absolutely can't miss these dishes if you go. They totally made me melt.
I've been here a couple of times over the years. It's always busy and the lineup at the door is normal. The manager is busy but efficient with inviting customers in when there is a table. I am not fond of the noise or the decor. It was not that clean and I noticed small bits of food on the carpeted floor. Apparently they must vacuum after the end of each day. The place is brightly lit. Tables are aligned in rows and it's just compact and tight in the place to fit as many people in as possible.
The servers are rather unenthusiastic and not very friendly or helpful. They seemed to be overworked and didn't show much extra pizazz. The last time I went there the food came out after about 20 minutes or so. It does get busy so the kitchen staff are rather pushed to the limits. I can understand that.
If it wasn't for the amazing food I would not visit this place. I do recommend this restaurant, but just for the food. Don't expect a wonderful comfortable dining experience... it's all about the food in this place. |

For the $100 I spent at Kiss Ya Mama, I could have come here, ate like a king, and have money left over for a movie for two and a bubble tea. Where do I start? How about...get the chicken wings!! Everyone in the restaurant orders it so you might as well too. I finally got a chance to try the butter beef, talk about exotic!! If you can stomach eating raw meat, try this dish, it's very unique. There's so many good dishes here - spring rolls, lemongrass chicken, filet beef on rice, list goes on and on. And the sauces at this place, just amazing (hoisin with hot chili oil, fish sauce, pepper sauce for chicken wings).
To all the restaurants that I have given a poor review, I suggest you come here, eat the food, and learn how to run your establishment like this all time Vancouver favorite!!
I LOVE THE PENH!!! |

Added Jun 28, 2007 by Quality_First of Vancouver (12 Reviews) Same two dishes Everytime I come here, whether I'm seated right away or whether I have to wait in line for a table, I always see the same two dishes being brought to tables or sitting at tables to be consumed: chicken wings and filet beef on rice.
I've always wanted to try other items on the menu and have sadly wished that I went back for my same two dishes - chicken and filet beef on rice. Why change a good thing? It's that good. You can't find chicken wings like this made anywhere else, so I guess they've got the monopoly on their deep fried chicken wings. I could eat a whole plate to myself if I wasn't too worried about what all that salt, oil and garlic would do to me that evening.
Maybe one time, I should throw in some veggies into the mix - make it a bit more of a balanced meal. I hear the pea tips are pretty good here. Next time!
I'd DEFINITELY take my mom here. She'd love it. |

Even with a busy restaurant, service is friendly. Tea are refilled.
The chicken wings are still the best and looks like all table ordered that. The fried rice is tasty. |

Added May 28, 2007 by bozlee of Tsawwassen (101 Reviews) Best in Chinatown A Saturday evening after 9.30PM for a tasty dinner with attentive servers who are often impatient to get off work and over to the night market.......the Phnom Penh was up to the task. The deep fried chicken wings with a mouth-watering lemon dipping sauce was the highlight, as identified by other reviewers. The butterfly prawns on a bed of rice/salad was unimaginative and sparse. The chicken in a delicate coconut sauce was much better. The restaurant itself was bright and comfortable and the servers both helful and friendly. Compared to the oversized Floata and other mediocre Chinatown restaurants this place was a hit. |

Added May 17, 2007 by cocoeater of vancouver (187 Reviews) The regular dishes Visited the Phnom recently and had the regular chicken wings, squid and dry noodles. As usual, very very good. Seems like every table orders these standards. Decided to try the Butter Beef that some tables were ordering. Is it me or is the beef been put in a microwave to cook it to rare/medium. The outside permiter seems to be cooked but the middle not cooked, typical for microwaved dishes.
Salad rolls were OK but I guess not their strong area. The chicken curry looks good and will try it next time. |

Also got a good selection of exotic asian drinks(all virgin). Juices and syruo based drinks. |

Added Mar 29, 2007 by louielobster of Glendale (54 Reviews) Need a little grease once in a while.
But it’s good grease! Back again to an old haunt for Cambodian/Vietnamese food. We ordered the Beef Meat Ball Noodle soup, BBQ Lemon Grass Pork Chops on rice and the Phnom Penh Deep Fried Chicken Wings. Those are our safe bets and can’t go astray with delicious favorites like these! The beef noodle soup was more than adequate. The pork chops marinated in lemon grass was grilled to perfection and the spicy garlic wings are to be savored.
We finished our meal with some soda and iced Vietnamese coffee and our bill for two with tip and taxes was bargain priced at 34.00 dollars. The service was prompt and the waitresses flashing smiles were genuine “happy” for our return visit!
I’ve tried many other dishes from their menu and would recommend them without hesitation. I’m reluctant to give this away but this is one of my “Exotic Secret” spots.

If you come during prime dining hours, be prepared to wait 20-30 minutes. The butter beef is outstanding as it is a favourite by many. Filet beef on rice with the egg is my personal favourite. The rest of the menu is long and should be checked out. The shakes are amazing too. Service is good as food is brought out fast even during peak periods. |

The cravings will come soon after. You'll be sitting at home, wondering who you can drag along to make them eat some chicken wings, sucking them into the spiraling addiction that is Phnom Penh's saltly chicken wings and sweet, garlicy pea tips. There's nothing in town like it. |

Added Feb 15, 2007 by dineoutburnaby of Burnaby (21 Reviews) Phnom Penh-nomena Our party of three went to Phnom Penh on Valentine's Day and it was like going there on a weekend. However, we were seated within 5-10 minutes so the wait wasn't too bad. Judging from the number of awards on their walls and the number of people there, this restaurant must be pretty popular.
Food: We ordered chicken wings, butter beef, filet beef with rice, fried rice, and a combo entree that had a beef brochette, sugar cane prawn and deep fried spring rolls. Wow! This is really good food!
Service: Pretty good, but it could be improved by expanding the restaurant and having more staff during peak periods to reduce the wait. Ambiance: Looks like they recently renovated so it looks bright and clean. I also like their pictures of Cambodia as well as their Chinese New Year decorations.
Price: Big portions and everything we ordered were $10 or less.
Overall: Great value and tasty food. Two thumbs up! |

After going up and down and almost giving up - we stumbled across Phnom Penh. Some of my buddies mentioned they had heard about the good reviews and since there was a line even at 2pm, we thought it must be good. My buddies and I trooped in and we had to wait for about 15 mins for a table. While waiting, the owner came out with a plate of chicken wings and served all those waiting in line ....I thought that was a nice touch. We will certainly order thew wings when we sat down. We ordered the chicken wings - and it didn't disappoint. It was very good. Next came hot steaming bowls of Pho - noodles in beef broth and slices of tender beef. Perfect! We also ordered the oyster omelette and curry chicken to share. Everything was excellent. However, half an hour later, we all felt really parched. We figured they must have loaded the dishes with lots of MSG - thats why it was so tasty. Well, I guess that is why I am only giving the food 3 instead of 4. |

Added Dec 2, 2006 by darrenkadish of Burnaby, B.C. (41 Reviews) I drove an hour in traffic for the wings ... After finishing a clearance show in Abbotsford tonight, I had a craving for some Phnom Penh chicken wings. So, with my sister in tow, we drove from Abbotsford to Chinatown (an hour in traffic!) to get our fix. This restaurant did not disappoint. We ordered a lot of food: (1) the chicken wings (which, by the way, a table behind us was eyeing at, so I gave them one to try out ... needless to say, they ordered their own plate), (2) the prawns (made the same way as the chicken wings), (3) the butter beef and (4&5) TWO plates of filet beef on rice. Needless to say, we enjoyed everything that we ate. It was all so amazing.
This restaurant produces amazing dishes, ones that cannot be found anywhere else in the city - which is probably why they are always busy. It must be that addictive ingredient that they put into their food that gets everybody coming back for more and more. The only downside is the service. We had to ask 3 different servers for our soup that went with our filet beef on rice and nobody came by the ask us how our meal was (even though they asked the table behind us). Maybe they knew that we were enjoying our food so much that they didn't need to ask?
It's no wonder that Urban Rush put this restaurant down as one of their Top 10 Best. It's definitely way up there in my books. |

The Urban Peasant, James Barber, has sited the butter beef as one of the best dishes in the city. I agree. Sometimes I dream about the food at this joint.
The service is effecient, friendly, and no nonsense.

Added Jul 25, 2006 by sarahtlee of Langley, BC (5 Reviews) AMAZING food When I first came to thsi place, I was apprehensive. But as soon as I ordered the Mango Shake, I was delighted by the fact that it tasted exactly like the ones I drank in the HCMC Market while I was in Vietnam last year. the shakes are really amazing, but very filling. I really like the jackfruit and mango ones.
The best food on the menu is the Beef with bean sprouts (really tender beef with a nicely sweet flavour) The chicken wings (nice and crisy with fried garlic and green onions on top, served with a mild lemon pepper sauce) and the Garlic Prawns (pretty much the same as the chicken wings but prawns)
We've never had to wait for than a few seconds for a table and the food always arrives quickly. Don't overlook this place, make sure you go and try all of the wonderful food that is has to offer Note: The reviewer has submitted a more recent review for this restaurant. Added Jun 5, 2006 by FoodSnob of Kitsilano, Vancouver (6 Reviews) Phnom Penh is solid There is definitely tasty food to be found at Phnom Penh.
I’m a fan of the bun (fresh noodle) dishes – cha gio (spring rolls) and lemongrass beef are great. I’m not such a fan of the soups.
Some of the dishes are a bit more pricey than you might find at other similar restaurants but the serving sizes are big.
After all the hype I tried the chicken wings and I have to admit they were good, if you are into the deep fried kind of stuff.
The moo shakes are also good.

Added Apr 21, 2006 by phnompenhsucks of Vancouver (1 Reviews) Food is Oh-kay, but service and ambience takes it right down I'd heard so much about this place, and I've eaten here twice based on all the Internet recommendations. Frankly, the food is decent but not particularly special, especially for the prices. The service is abominable -- I sat and watched as people who had gotten there after me ordered first and got their food before me, and waiters and the owner pass me several times while I was waiting with a closed menu and looking right at them before even realizing I was ready to order. Same thing happened when I was trying to pay. Come on, Phnom Penh, get with it!
In terms of ambience, it's maybe a notch above going to a banquet hall in the suburbs. Avoid this place, there are many other places to spend your money and you'll get better food and better service. |

Honestly I haven't had anything bad off thier menu. Their dishes are full of flavour, good portion size, well priced. |

Added Jan 31, 2006 by kwailan of Coquitlam (78 Reviews) Outstanding food I have heard so much about this place, but no one ever mentioned the curry chicken served in a hot pot.
The curry is as good as those I grew up eating in South East Asia. My wife even said it is better than my mom's! Downside, it cost almost $12 without rice. Baguette cost another $1.50.
The wings and dry noodles are outstanding as well. The grilled lemongrass chicken and springrolls are decent, but we had better ones at other Vietnamese restaurants.
Service is efficient and ambience is your typical Asian restaurant in Chinatown.
Despite its cost (and msg? I am getting more thirsty by the minute), I will definitely return for the curry, though not too frequently. |

Also, the dry noodles are pretty good...I like them in egg noodles. and yes, I'm asian so I would like more liver please ;) |

Added Feb 26, 2005 by ting of Richmond, Vancouver (30 Reviews) incredible value! Yes, even though I still couldn't differentiate between Viet and Cambodian cuisine after eating here, I thoroughly enjoyed the Chicken Salad. Dinner came to $11 pp (incl tax and tips!), and we even had leftovers. Way more interesting than going to a typical diner. |

Added Jan 24, 2005 by Garee of Vancouver (9 Reviews) Probably the only Cambodian food in the city. Make no mistake about it. The reason I go is for the food. Not the service, not the location, and not the ambiance. Not the whole menu is great, but order the right stuff and you'll go home happy. Highlights (sorry for the makeup names): Shrimp Soup - Sour, but deliciously so. Full of fresh stuff. Dry Noodles with Everything - Incredibly sophisticated bowl of noodles. Again, full of ingredients from flavourful minced meat to aromatic cilantro to crunchy inerts. Beef Luc Lac Rice - Sweet addictive sauce with beef... more rice please! Fried Chicken Wings - Perfectly fried, perfectly seasoned. Chicken Curry with bread - Exotic blend of coconut milk, curry spice, and sweetness from the yam. Perfect match with the bread. *MUST TRY: Durian Sticky Rice - a layer of aromatic durian pudding minus the garbage-like odour on top of a bed of warm sticky rice, smothered in a thick coat of coconut cream. It's mind-boggling that durian can taste this good.
So, order the correct dishes and the meal will be rewarding. |

Added Nov 15, 2004 by Miles of Kitsilano (27 Reviews) Cambo Mambo Order dry noodles with the works. If you happen to be caucasian and enjoy liver make sure you're not a victim of racial profiling and stress beforehand that you actually enjoy it. The chicken wings with lemon pepper dipping sauce, seasoned with garlic and chilis is a perfect side car to share with a buddy. Try the durian sticky rice if you're down with the stinkiest of fruits. |

Added Nov 15, 2004 by Ho in the Wall of Main St. (16 Reviews) Forget Vietnamese Try This you'll get cravings for this place. you'll be in the middle of turning left on the road, and then the light crispiness of their deep fried chicken wings gets in your head. you can feel the little drumstick in your hand as you go for a satisfying dip into the lemon sauce. and you think, 'this sour sauce offsets any greasy side effects of this deep fried food just like hot water cuts the calories of a church's fried chicken.' and then you find yourself calling up your hole in the wall buddy, and no matter what you all got planned for the evening it's all about meeting at phnom penh in an hour. because you can always squeeze it in. a decent meal won't take more than 30 minutes. especially if you order their number one. cambodian noodles with seafood and meats (ask for dry with soup on the side). food that gets under your skin - even though you'd want to try the other 200 items on the menu (like sauteed frog legs) you'll order the same good shit.
